Kuba is a former snapjaw, a type of lizard, on the plane of Ravnica. After a period as a pet, it fell into the Ravnica sewers, and after a series of events involving three different guilds, Kuba emerged as a thinking humanoid creature.

History

As a young hatchling, Kuba was purchased at Tin Street Market by the boy Ruslan. At three weeks of age, Kuba was large enough to eat rats and probably also Alena's dog. Kuba appeared to show protectiveness over Ruslan, but at a later point, Kuba ran after something into the sewer and did not get back to Ruslan. Instead, Kuba made its way into a Golgari Rot Farm where it kept fighting and eating. The Golgari learned to stay away from it after two workers and a handler were also eaten by it. To get rid of it, the Golgari herded Kuba into Izzet territory.

Kuba was by now quite a large creature, and it was encountered by the Izzet mechanoaugmentation specialist Kelen Jek. As an experiment, he used a mizzium mechanical augmentation framework in concert with a neuroamplification serum on Kuba, which resulted in both enhanced cognition as well as a reinforced skeletal system.

Kuba broke out of his Izzet enclosure and escaped into Simic territory, badly injured but now very powerful in both muscle tissue and skeletal strength. The biomancer Stanisil of Hull Clade found Kuba in this state and nursed it back to health. However, an unexpected mutation took place after Kuba was put into the incubation vat. The enhanced snapjaw began to manifest incredible intellectual expansion and began to develop approximations of humanoid features.

Kuba eventually developed sapience and full intelligence. Stanisil encouraged this as a wild experiment, knowing he would never be able to replicate it. As Stanisil later wrote to Speaker Trifon, Kuba eventually learned to read and write under the careful tutelage of the biomancer, even as his forelimbs developed into something close to hands. The Simic took care of Kuba and treated the former snapjaw with respect, but at the same time, Kuba was bothered by their unending curiosity. Kuba knew what to do then because memories were also resurfacing now, stronger than before. The boy Ruslan, and a home. Kuba would return home and even remembered the way.
