Tarkir: Dragonstorm is a Magic set that was released on April 11, 2025. It is a return to Tarkir, the setting of the Khans of Tarkir block from a decade prior, and is similarly themed around the conflict between the plane's dragons and the humanoid clans. Dragonstorm is the 104th expansion of the game.
The set contains a Dragon typal theme, which is supported by the new Omen spell subtype and the behold keyword action. The clans of Tarkir each receive a unique named mechanic and return to their wedge colors. In the conclusion to the Dragonstorm Arc, those clans overthrow the dragonlords with the assistance of newly conjured spirit dragons, and Ugin returns to quell the dragonstorms. Meanwhile, Jace Beleren falters in an attempt to reshape the Multiverse, and an elder dragon reclaims his name and escapes.
Product suite
Tarkir: Dragonstorm features 286 regular cards (91 commons, 100 uncommons, 60 rares, 20 mythic rares, 15 basic lands), and includes randomly inserted traditional foil versions of all cards. The regular set includes full-art "Dragon's Presence" basic lands (#282-286). Alternate card frames have a different card number than the original version.[3] Full-art "Dragon's Eye" basic lands are #287-291. Showcase cards with the "draconic" frame are #292-326. borderless clan cards (which have the clan symbol in the background of the art) are #327-376, and borderless reversible cards (dragons with a baby version of the backside) are #377-382. Borderless alternate art cards are #383-398. The Showcase Ghostflame card treatment can be found on 10 cards (#399-408).[6] Halo foil versions of the ghostflame cards are #409-418. The Headliner is #419, and the promo cards are numbered #420-426.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, five Commander decks, and the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Bundle.
Headliner
The Headliner for this set is Mox Jasper, which features a serialized version (#1-500) and a showcase Draconic frame.
Special Guests
Tarkir Dragonstorm features 10 Special Guests (SPG #104-113) in the cycle of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Ultimatums and the enemy colored fetch lands.[3] These may be found in Play Boosters and may be played in Limited games. You'll find a non-foil Special Guests card in 1 out of 64 Play Boosters (1.5%). Traditional foil Special Guests cards can be found in Collector Boosters (4.2% to replace the traditional foil Booster Fun rare or mythic rare card). Collector Boosters also have the opportunity to contain an alternate art dragonscale foil version of the fetch lands (SPG #114-118).[3]
Commander decks
Tarkir: Dragonstorm features five Commander decks that are released as a regular part of the set's product line. Each deck is focused around one of the Tarkiri Clans.

Themes and mechanics
Building on the original visits to the plane, Tarkir: Dragonstorm delivers the "best of both worlds": dragons and factionalized three-color clan gameplay.[8] Unlike Khans of Tarkir, the wedges of the renewed clans are centered more around the enemy color, with the caveat that they have the same general flavor of the original versions of the clan, which is influenced by the old center color. The clans’ central colors could be switched since they no longer had to match an ally-colored dragon brood.[9][10][11] In addition, the "returning color" received some extra attention in design.[12]
Each clan features a new mechanic, inspired by the clan mechanics of Khans of Tarkir:[13]
- The Abzan Houses (
) have Endure, an ability that ensures their forces will steadily grow. Whenever a creature endures X, its controller puts X +1/+1 counters on it or creates an X/X white Spirit creature token.
- The Jeskai Way (
) have Flurry, an ability that rewards striking at the right time. A flurry ability triggers whenever you cast your second spell each turn.
- The Sultai Brood (
) have Renew, an ability that allows even the dead to contribute their strength. Renew abilities can only be activated from the graveyard and require you to exile the card with the ability. They always put a counter on a creature, and so is the second set to have the minor theme of keyword counters.
- The Mardu Horde (
) have Mobilize, an ability that encourages aggression. Whenever a creature with mobilize X attacks, its controller creates X 1/1 red Warrior creature tokens that are tapped and attacking but are sacrificed during their end step.
- The Temur Frontier (
) have Harmonize, an ability which rewards strength with wisdom. Harmonize is the same as flashback, but the alternate cost can be reduced by
by tapping a creature you control with X power.
Similar to the original Tarkir set, watermarks are used to identify the clans. Watermarks are restricted to the three-color cards, cards with the clan-mechanics, and the cycle of mono-color legends.[12] Notably, the desparked watermark is not used for the desparked planeswalkers Sarkhan and Narset, with Narset using the Jeskai watermark instead.
A new dragon-centric mechanic is Behold. This is a cost you can pay by choosing a permanent you control or revealing a card from your hand with some specific quality. To "behold a Dragon," you choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand. This keyword works similarly to a few cards from Dragons of Tarkir, such as Draconic Roar, which all functionally gained benefits if you beheld a Dragon as you cast them.
Storm appears as a cameo on Stormscale Scion, as well as suspend on Taigam, Master Opportunist and delve on Teval, Arbiter of Virtue. Decayed appears on a non-token for the first time (Rot-Curse Rakshasa). Morph, which played a prominent role in the original block, is notably absent.[14] Two-brid mana makes a return.
Card types
Omen is a new subtype for instants and sorceries. It appears in the text box of creatures like Adventures, but the card is shuffled into its owner's library after casting instead of remaining available to cast in exile, forcing a choice between the Omen and the creature. In Tarkir: Dragonstorm, this is a dragon-centric mechanic, appearing only on Dragons in this set to increase their as-fan, notably in a common and uncommon cycle for the Limited format.[15]
The set also features a cycle of 3-colored Sagas.
Counters
Tarkir: Dragonstorm introduces decayed counters on Rot-Curse Rakshasa.
Limited archetypes

As a three-color set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm includes the following draft archetypes, each representing a Tarkir clan:[16]
(
Abzan Houses): Endure Midrange
(
Jeskai Way): Flurry Tempo
(
Sultai Brood): Renew Control
(
Mardu Horde): Mobilize Aggro
(
Temur Frontier): Harmonize Ramp
To have glue within the format, there are overlapping synergies between the Clan colors in the form of two-color limited archetypes:
: Tokens Sacrifice
: Second Spell Matters
: Counters Matter
: Go Wide Tokens
: Cards Leaving Graveyards
Finally, Dragons appear as a secondary theme in all colors with support and synergy at lower rarities (e.g. Dragonstorm Globe, Dragonbroods' Relic, Exhale cycle), enabling a five-color archetype:[17]
: Dragons
Storyline
The set marks the conclusion of the Dragonstorm Arc. After the Stormnexus Ritual, the elder dragonlords have been replaced by five new spirit dragons. A new breed of dragons is now pouring out through dragonstorms all over the plane.[18] As the dragons take flight across the skies of Tarkir, each flap of their wings rips through the Omenpaths. The five resurgent clans of Tarkir strike back against this threat to the Multiverse.[19]
The clans of Tarkir, through the research of the desparked planeswalker Narset, discovered a means of summoning and binding spirit dragons to their service. With those new allies, the clans were able to overthrow the dragonlords who had ruled the plane, but the newly empowered dragonstorms render large areas uninhabitable and spawn new, uncontrolled dragons that can escape Tarkir through the Omenpaths.
Jace arrives on Tarkir, accompanied by Loot and Vraska, and travels through it to the Meditation Realm. He intends to use the unique powers of the Meditation Realm to reshape the Multiverse but is confronted there by Narset and Elspeth and loses control of those powers. Their conflict tips the balance of the ongoing struggle between Ugin and Nicol Bolas, and Bolas recovers his name and escapes, while Jace appears to become connected to the Meditation Realm.
The cards that represent the Story Spotlights in Tarkir: Dragonstorm are:

The set was first teased during the 2023 Announcement Day panel at Gen Con Indiana where it was revealed that it's focused on a return to Tarkir.[2][21] R&D aims for this set to combine the best features of Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir as a "best of both worlds" solution to the fan reception of the original block, featuring both Dragons and factionalized gameplay.[22]

Notable cards
- Call the Spirit Dragons is an alternate win card.
- Mox Jasper is the first new Mox since Mox Tantalite six years earlier.
- Sunset Strikemaster is the first unconditional red mana dork since Sisters of the Flame (The Dark).[12] This is a conscious shift in design philosophy.[25]
Banned and restricted cards
- Cori-Steel Cutter is an efficient Equipment combined with a Monastery Mentor-adjacent token creation engine. In a shell designed to take full advantage of prowess, it dominated Standard, representing a full 40% of the decks submitted to Pro Tour Final Fantasy. It was quickly determined that efficient answers to Cutter simply did not exist in the format, and it was banned in the interest of metagame diversity.[26]
Misprints
- All German-language versions of the card Dragonback Assault are missing "with flying" from the rules text concerning the created tokens.[27]
