Eshki Dragonclaw is a human warrior from Tarkir. She is the current khan of the Temur Frontier and bound to the spirit dragon Ureni.
Description
Eshki is a wrestler and fighter, rarely seen without her hunting dog companion.[1] The Dragonclaw leads the Temur together with her good friend, the Twice Whisperer Alniul. They are considered to represent the body and heart of the clan.[2] Through her stalwart leadership, Eshki has proven herself up to the whisperers' and spirits' expectations. She remains in tune with her community and spends much of her time traveling alongside her wife and dog amongst different family groups of the Temur, seeking to know more about their daily triumphs and challenges.[3]
History
Eshki was a proficient hunter and premier wrestler within Atarka's brood. For many years, she begrudgingly acquiesced to the dragonlord's demands, hunting for the dragons alongside her. When her hunting group was attacked by one of Atarka's broods and left for dead, Eshki had enough. She escaped into the mountains along with the rest of the survivors. There, she met Twice Whisperer Alniul, who told her of the Unwritten Now, the secret history of the Temur.[3]
Eshki and her allies worked in secret, evading Atarka's brood and seeking out others who wished to revive their lost connection to the land. During the New Phyrexian invasion, Eshki took charge of the scattered Atarka forces to fight back against the invaders. In the wake of the invasion, Tarkir's clans, who had maintained secret followings, began to openly rebel against the dragonlords and their weakened broods. However, Surrak believed that Atarka was still too strong and did not want his clan members to be slaughtered by the dragons, so he challenged Eshki as the leader of the Temur rebellion. After a brutal fight, Eshki came out on top, proving her strength in front of Surrak's army and forcing him to surrender. She was appointed Dragonclaw, and the rebellion was ultimately successful.[2][3]
During the Stormnexus Ritual, Eshki called the spirit dragon Ureni into being, shaping their essence with her own beliefs.[4]
Years later, Surrak lived in a small village on the edge of Temur territory when the land was suddenly struck with blight. It infested living things with veins of pale blue light and weakened them until they died, spreading out from a nexus in Surrak's village. Thanks to his great strength, he managed to survive the disease. Eventually, Eshki and Alniul came to investigate the blight, finding Surrak in a pool of blue on the verge of death. By making a ritual circle and communing with the spirits of the land, the three discovered that the disease was born from the angry spirits of desperate Atarka clan members who had to debase themselves to survive. They pledged that all would be welcome at the fires of the Temur, and the blight was brought to an end. Afterward, Surrak rejoined the clan and began traveling with Eshki and Alniul, although he still held a grudge against the former.[2]
