The snowy, craggy Qal Sisma mountain range and its foothills are the territory of the semi-nomadic Temur Frontier, and formerly of the Atarka brood, on Tarkir.[1][2]
Description
Temur land borders directly with the Mardu and Jeskai.[2] The climate is subarctic, with freezing temperatures and much of the landscape covered in snow for most of the year. Summers are short and verdant.
Known locations
- Karakyk Glacial Settlement — Located within a glacial valley, the village is one of the two mostly permanent locations of the Temur that is primarily occupied through the winter months.[2] Carved ice caverns provide comfort and insulation, with openings made from treated leather and dragon bone.
- Summer Landing — An alpine forest clearing located in the foothills, formally known as Ayagor (or "dragon bowl").[2] The site has been reclaimed by the Temur and is used for the annual observation of Zenith Day, where they celebrate their continued survival as a clan and commemorate those lost to Atarka's cruelty.
- Mistrise Village — A semi-permanent settlement built around geothermal steam vents that are used to heat homes as the seasons change.[2] The vents are most active in the spring and fall, causing an influx of Temur families to come to the village during those months.
- The Eternal Ice or Eternal Peak — A holy sacred mountain peak with a mountain snowfield that is solid and stable.[2] It is a place traversed only by whisperers and contains a special site for important whisperer ceremonies.[3]
- Qadat, the Fire Rim — Located between Tiansun and Temur lands, formally belonging to the Jeskai and later conquered by Atarka.[2] Currently, there is a tentative accord, allowing either clan to hunt and gather in the region, but no settlements may be built there. The region is known for its volcanic activity.
- The Dragon's Throat — A high, winding valley where the natural acoustics have created a continuous wail.[2] This is a sacred location visited only by whisperers.[4]
- Glintglaze Lake — An alpine lake that freezes over in winter but remains an abundant source of fish all year.[2] The ice is dense enough in winter that Temur will camp on its surface.
- Rainveil Forest — A verdant forest that covers much of the lower mountains, this region is frequented by the Temur during the summer when the flora and fauna are most abundant.[2] The journey from the mountains to Rainveil Forest takes no more than a week.[5]
- The Crucible of the Spirit Dragon, where Ugin hibernated in a hedron cocoon. In 4559 AR, Sarkhan Vol was sent back in time from this location, and Sorin Markov awoke the dragon from his hibernation. Later, the Stormnexus Ritual was performed here.[6]
Historical
- The Melting Wilds. In the current timeline, the arrival of Atarka and the storms that birthed her brood were accompanied by widespread melting of the icy reaches in the Qal Sisma Mountains. Many of the mountaintop glaciers disappeared, and sudden floods caused by rapid ice melt are frequent.[1]
- In the original timeline, Karakyk Valley was a glacier-carved valley that functions as their permanent winter residence for the coldest two months of the year.
- Ayagor, the Dragon's Bowl. The circle of Karakyk does not exist in the current timeline. Instead, the spot where Atarka first settled became a central gathering place.
- The Staircase of Bones: was a rounded hilltop that functions as the meeting place for the various family hunting groups.
- Qadat, the Fire Rim was home of the Efreeti, before it was conquered by Atarka.
- In the original timeline Ugin's Nexus was a point deep within the ravine where Ugin's bones rested. There, reality was always shifting and twisting.[7] In the current timeline this is the Crucible of the Spirit Dragon.
