Shu Yun (Traditional Chinese: 恕雲; Simplified Chinese: 恕云; pinyin: Shù Yún; literally "Forgiving Cloud") was a khan of the Jeskai Way in the past of Tarkir.[1]

History

Shu Yun lived 1,280 years ago. As his path toward enlightenment, Shu Yun threw a stone into a thousand bodies of water across Tarkir, watching the ripples and gathering knowledge from the water.[2] His relatively youthful appearance belied the fact that he was among the oldest people on Tarkir. He was an extremely skilled fighter, having mastered every form of combat known to the Jeskai, and he bore the dragon mark of a ghostfire warrior. He was dedicated to improving the combat skills of every member of the clan. Within the catacombs of the Ojutai, Shu Yun and his disciples collected secret knowledge. They sought to preserve this knowledge for Tarkir's future, no matter what fate that future would hold.[3]

In the current timeline, Shu Yun attempted to hold a meeting for the khans to deal with the dragons, but this failed as the beasts attacked, forcing the Jeskai to surrender. To preserve his clan's existence, Shu Yun forfeited his life, resulting in Ojutai callously freezing him to death. Eighteen years after the Khanfall of Tarkir, some of the Jeskai knowledge was brought to Yasova Dragonclaw by one of his followers.[4][5]

Legacy

Shu Yun's teachings would become the foundation for the renewed Jeskai religion over a millennium after his death.[6] His devotion to keeping Tarkir's history is honored each year in the Athenaeum Festival.
