Guardian: Saviors of Kamigawa

Ryusei, the Falling Star (RYOO-say;[1] Japanese: (りゅう) (せい) ; rōmaji: Ryūsei; literally: "Falling Star"), was the great ryuu (divine dragon) of Kamigawa's mountains. He guarded Sokenzan and has since reincarnated as Atsushi, who is female.

History

Centuries after the Kami War, Ryusei was the only spirit dragon to remain alive. The dragons had been some of the mortal realm's strongest protectors, and with most of them gone, other malevolent forces soon began to wreak havoc. During the Shattered States Era, a wave of oni attacks swept across the land, culminating in a devastating event known as the Night of Withering that threatened the entire Kamigawa. In an effort to fight back, the orochi enacted a powerful ritual to resurrect Jugan, their original protector. The ritual was successful, and together Jugan and Ryusei defeated the oni incursion.[2]

Jugan embarked on a journey to collect the remaining essences of the other three dragons, then placed them all inside an egg. She and Ryusei willingly placed themselves in the egg as well and fell into a deep sleep. The egg was sealed into the heart of Boseiju, where it was nurtured for fifty years. When it finally hatched open, the five dragons emerged, reborn in their new forms.[2]

Neon Dynasty

Along with the other ryuu, Ryusei was reborn after a fifty-year slumber in an egg beneath Boseiju. His new form was that of Atsushi, the Blazing Sky.[2]

Out of all the divine dragons, Atsushi has most fully embraced her reincarnation. Despite the fact that she never died, she chose to be reborn along with the other dragons and take on a new form. Most of the time, she's genial and happy-go-lucky, though she's been known to fly into a destructive rage whenever someone manages to trigger her flashfire temper. She continues to act as guardian for the Sokenzan mountains and is a frequent visitor at Sokenzanshi, where her presence is always welcomed enthusiastically.[3]
