Iname (ee-NAH-may)[1] is the kami of life and death on Kamigawa.[2]
Description
Iname means both the nothingness of death and the budding of life, referring to his two aspects: one of life and one of death.[2][3] Iname's life aspect has a long, green body. His hair is fiery red, and wings of leaves spread from his back. Iname's death aspect has a terrible visage. It is jagged and twisted, bristling with drooling fangs, claws, and razor-sharp hair. Its leathery wings shake with untold strength, and its whole form is filled with evil power.
History
In the earliest times of the universe, there was a young kami called Iname, who lacked form or function.[2][3] He sought advice from his siblings, the kami of chaos, light, and knowledge, but was unsatisfied with their suggestions. Seeking answers beyond other kami, he realized that he must create a life of his own.
Molding matter and energy and light in his fingers, as this new life took form, so did Iname.[2][3] It took hundreds of years, but he found a form that pleased him. Finally, he lent just a touch of his kami life force to his creation, and the first kami Child since the beginning of time was born. Thus did Iname become the kami of life.
As the major kami became aware of Iname's creation, they requested new forms of life to worship them, leading to the creation of Kamigawa's mortal races.[2][3] Iname and the Child traveled the universe, eventually locating a distant planet and populating it with life. The Child took after its father, creating a flower and becoming the first kami of flowers. As the two grew distant, Iname began to hear a voice turning him against the Child. When the Child tried to leave its father, Iname killed it, revealing his second aspect as the kami of death. And so began the struggle between life and death that continues to this very day.
