Numai (NOO-meye; lit. “swamp home”)[1] is a human settlement in the Takenuma swamp of the plane of Kamigawa.
Description
Numai was the dullest section of the fen, known as Numai (“swamp home”) because so many humans had constructed their houses upon great bamboo stilts. Where rich and powerful people like Uramon lived in restored manor houses from years gone by, common folk had to make do with far less. The southwest quarter provided all the privacy and anonymity one could need. Prying into others’ affairs was dangerous, even suicidal in the main marsh, but it was unheard of in Numai. There was hardly anyone worth knowing and nothing worth stealing. The outskirts of the city reached near the western edge of the swamp.[2]
The Rat's Nest was a filthy, sagging tavern that was perched up on bamboo stilts like every other establishment in the Numai section of the swamp, but the Nest's east end had sunk far deeper into the muck so that foul, oily water lapped at the patron's feet at one end of the room.[3]
History
Numai was once a prospering human city that became a loose group of half-deteriorated buildings. During the Kami War, it was the base of the mahotsukai cult, a group of powerful black jushi (wizards), the greatest of which was Kiku, as well as being the home of Toshiro Umezawa.[4]
