Otawara is a Soratami city resting on clouds, floating in the sky of Kamigawa.

Description

Floating above Lake Kamitaki, Otawara is a place of beauty and mystery, with mist and clouds swirling between buildings. Although non-moonfolk were previously prohibited from entering, the floating city now accepts intrepid researchers of all kinds within its halls. However, some of its pathways and entrances are still hidden and deliberately designed to be confusing to dissuade outsiders.

It is a true city - one can walk along its sapphire-blue streets for days, perhaps weeks without reaching the other side. Brilliant white metal arcs support the towering steel spires that pierce the night sky overhead. Polished granite domes cap museums and grand meditation cathedrals. Silver wire as fine as spiderwebs is woven into intricate patterns that connect building to building and spire to pavement. Under a full moon, the entire city catches and reflects the light, creating a captivating display of shimmering lights and shadows.[1]

Many of its buildings are covered in polished metal and glass, reflecting the plane like it was shining a spotlight on every sudden movement.[2][3] There are surveillance drones everywhere, and enormous, origami mechs that prowl the edges of the floating city.

Formerly the exclusive domain of the moonfolk, the floating city has opened its doors to intrepid researchers of all kinds. Nevertheless, it remains a place of beauty and mystery. Mist and clouds swirl between buildings. Pathways and entrances are hidden and deliberately confusing, meant to dissuade outsiders. The only place non-moonfolk are still forbidden is Oboro, the Ancient Palace, which is considered sacred ground to the moonfolk.[4]

History

During the Kami War, Toshiro Umezawa secretly followed the soratami prophet Chiyo to the streets of Otawara. There, he revealed himself to her, and she immediately attacked him, incensed at his befouling presence. Although her rage gave her speed, Toshi cracked her nose and then summoned Hidetsugu's oni hound to Otawara before using the Shadow Gate to escape.[1]

The city was badly damaged during the New Phyrexian Invasion, requiring years or decades of repairs.[3]
