History
During their studies at Minamo, Azami Ozu and her friend Etsumi Urano came to the Kitanosu Temple seeking the battle plans and journal of General Sonzaki. About to be captured, he had secreted the cumbersome scroll tubes inside a shrine in the temple, and the two aspiring scholars desired to make their names. To them, the old documents would be invaluable. They avoided the haphazard nezumi patrols and snuck past a drunk human ochimusha in the temple. They found the documents but were spotted by the ochimusa, who alerted the village's nezumi. Etsumi fell into a quicksand pit and wanted to leave the documents behind to get to safety. Azami prioritized the documents over her friend, leaving Etsumi to die either from the nezumi chasing them or the quicksand itself.[1]
Years later, during the Kami War, Kitanosu was haunted by Horobi, the kami of death's wail. The shaman Forked-Tongue told the villagers of Kitanosu that they needed to sacrifice someone to Horobi every three nights to keep it at bay. To appease the spirit, they decided to sacrifice Sonokura, a human drunkard and outcast who had been living in their village for a time.[2]
