Virot Maglan, the Cabal Patriarch (also known as The First of the Cabal) was the leader and founder of Dominaria's Cabal.[1][2]

Description

The First was old, but not wizened. His skin was gray and smooth as stone. He usually wore his regalia, his head covered with a headdress. The First's skin was as gray and smooth as stone. He wore robes of black hide, gleaming with oil to keep them supple, and a tall black miter. Eight attendants accompanied him, wearing the Cabal's livery of hand and skull. He touched no one, for his touch could kill. Only his hand servants touched for him, and his skull servants did the bidding of his mind.[3]

Sometimes in less officious settings, he would dress in black hide, cured and tanned until it was as stiff as glass. His clothing then seemed coated in a thin film of oil, especially at the elbows and shoulders. In this simple businesslike robe, head unadorned, he seemed somehow more intimidating than he did in full headdress and regalia. The First's eyes were milky white, but this indicated an increased facility rather than a diminished one. It was said that the First could see through a person's soul as easily as he could through walls. The gray-white orbs darted and focused around the room.[4]

History

Virot Maglan oversaw the Rise of the Cabal and became the First, its Patriarch.[5] As the first and chief worshipper of Kuberr, he was gifted with an enormously extended lifespan and the ability to decay anything he touched. Under his influence, the Cabal grew to be highly wealthy and influential in Otaria. During the Battle for the Mirari, he was exiled to Aphetto when Ambassador Laquatus provided Chainer with his secret name, Calchexas, as even with the Mirari, Chainer had been unable to kill him. Following Chainer's death, the First regained control over the Cabal based in Aphetto and looked to extend his influence over Otaria by creating the Grand Coliseum.

He found a form of love in Phage, who shared his curse of decaying all flesh he touched. He made her increasingly important to the Cabal, placing her in charge of the construction of the Grand Coliseum. After he sent Phage to lead the Nightmare War against Ixidor, he received a vision from Kuberr that they belonged together, but with hints that she might end up killing him. Upon her return to the Coliseum, he had arranged for a darkly romantic welcome to her, and they made love. Soon after, he attempted to assassinate her with a dager, but her revelation that she was pregnant stayed his hand, and she took the dagger from him. The son bore turned out to be none other than the reborn god Kuberr. Shortly after the birth, the First again tried to kill the weakened mother but found that he had lost his immortality due to betraying Kuberr, allowing Braids to intervene and snap him in half with a dementia creature.
