Riptide Island is an island off the coast of Otaria.
Description
Riptide Island lies hidden off the southeastern coast of the continent, east of the Daru Plains.
History
The island was populated following the Battle for the Mirari, and was the site of the Riptide Project, one of the best-kept secrets on Otaria. It even managed to hide its existence from the power Cabal, which was no easy task. After Empress Llawan solidified her hold on the throne of the cephalid empire, she decided that her people's prejudice against air-breathers had to end. To facilitate this, she established an alliance between her best sorcerers and some powerful Otarian wizards. The collaboration was designed to research magic for the benefit of both humans and cephalids, with the Riptide Project being the result.[1]
The Riptide Project decided to delve into the recration of slivers with the best intentions[2], with one of its members bringing the remains of a dead sliver to Riptide Island from Urborg. The Sliver Lair had been brought to Urborg from Rath during the Rathi Overlay, but the Urborg volcano the lair landed on it killed off all the Rathi slivers, including their queen. Determined to find out more about this odd new species, the Project’s wizards revived it, breeding new types with new powers. Although initial trials proved successful, the slivers eventually started getting out of hand. The first wave of slivers perished from the Riptide wizards’ magic. The second wave shrugged off their spells like water.[3]
With no Sliver Queen to control them, the slivers eventually swarmed all over Riptide Island, killing most of the researchers. After the survivors, such as Pemmin, had fled, the grounds of the Riptide Project were populated only by slivers, broken beakers, and the lonely screeching of gulls.[4] Not satisfied with only the single island, the slivers cast their gaze on mainland Otaria. Taking the form of a junior researcher, the first sliver slipped out of Riptide.[5] After breaking free from the Riptide Project, the slivers quickly adapted to life on Otaria — much to the dismay of life on Otaria.[6] It would take another apocalypse to stop the slivers.[7].
