The Aboshan Trench is an area of the Mer Empire that formerly was part of continental Otaria, on the plane of Dominaria.

Description

The Aboshan Trench, named after its creator, Emperor Aboshan, is a stretch of land that formerly belonged to continental Otaria. The land included everything between the upper border of Krosa and the southern edge of Cape Paradise, including the coastal town of Borben. Smashed to the bottom of the sea, the land was not abundant with natural resources, but the Mer Empire nevertheless lay claim to it, as it was beneath the ocean's waves. The Aboshan Trench also prominently featured the Otaria Chasm, which played a role in Llawan's strategy against Laquatus.[1][2]

History

During the Battle for the Mirari in 4305 AR, the Mirari was found by Emperor Aboshan, buried in silt in the lower levels of an imperial treasury. Aboshan's desire was to bury all of Otaria beneath the waves, both to increase the size of his realm and to eliminate the air-breathers who bothered him so much. With the Mirari, he saw the opportunity to make his dreams come true. Certainly, the artifact was immensely powerful, and he knew it would enable him to sink the land beneath the waves. Aboshan activated the artifact and cast its powers against the continent, creating giant crashing waves that claimed the stretch of coast that later would be named the Aboshan Trench. However, Mirari's nature drew on the essence of its wielder, and the spell quickly caused Aboshan to wither away and die, ending the effect of the spell before it could continue to destroy any more land.[3]

The Aboshan Trench was named by Aboshan's widow, Llawan, who had her advisor Rillu Veza survey the new Mer land and plant portal crystals in the Otaria Chasm as a trap for Llawan's scheming enemy, Laquatus. Creating a false map describing abundant natural resources, Laquatus was lured into the Otaria Chasm and then trapped there when the portal crystals were activated. Although Laquatus himself was able to escape into Krosa using hidden water channels, his army was wiped out by Llawan in the meantime, leading to Laquatus's downfall in the forest.[2]
