The Thaw War with Phyrexia Rift Era

The War with Phyrexia is an era in history that involved a handful of planes centered on the impending invasion of Dominaria by the forces of Yawgmoth and the plane of Phyrexia.

Description

The era known as the War with Phyrexia is recognized as a particularly significant and destructive period in the history of Dominaria and other affected parts of the Multiverse. Initiated by the ascension of Urza, this conflict marked the culmination of extended preparations, strategic maneuvers, and large-scale confrontations against the forces of Yawgmoth, the ruler of Phyrexia.

The origins of the conflict trace back to the Brothers' War, during which Urza’s brother, Mishra, was corrupted by Phyrexian influence. Following his ascension as a planeswalker, Urza discovered that Phyrexia's ambitions extended beyond Dominaria. A planeswalk to the plane of Phyrexia confirmed the extent of Yawgmoth's plans — the assimilation of all life into Phyrexia's vision of Compleation. Acknowledging the difficulty of confronting such a force alone, Urza began extensive preparations to counteract the Phyrexian threat.

Central to these preparations was the construction of the Legacy, a series of artifacts and weapons intended to combat Phyrexia. Additionally, the Bloodline Project aimed to develop lineages capable of wielding the Legacy effectively, such as Clan Capashen. Concurrently, Yawgmoth expanded Phyrexia’s influence, constructing the plane of Rath as a base for invasion and amassing armies of enhanced minions, as well as corrupting Serra's Realm with his agents, leading to that plane's downfall.

The War with Phyrexia encompassed numerous significant events, both directly tied to the conflict and independent of it. These included the Founding of the Tolarian Academy and the Tolarian Temporal Disaster, the rise of important nations like Benalia and New Vodalia, large-scale conflicts such as Johan's War and Arzakon's War on Shandalar, and the collapse of Serra's Realm. Other notable events include the Battle of Lat-Nam, the Fall of Oneah, the Mirtiin Rebellion, the Mirage War, and the Rathi Overlay, which directly preceded the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria.

The Phyrexian Invasion itself was characterized by extensive loss of life and widespread devastation of Dominaria. However, through the combined efforts of the plane’s defenders, the wielders of the Legacy, and Urza's ultimate sacrifice, Yawgmoth was defeated, and Phyrexia's influence on Dominaria was repelled. Despite this victory, the conflict left lasting damage, reshaping the political, social, and environmental landscape of Dominaria.

The conclusion of the War with Phyrexia marked the start of the Rift Era, a period of instability resulting from the extensive use of time magic and planar manipulation during the conflict. Although Yawgmoth and Phyrexia were defeated, the consequences of the war continued to influence the Multiverse for many years afterward.
