Malil was a golem made by Memnarch on Mirrodin, as his personal assistant.
Description
Malil was made in the likeness of Memnarch, appearing as the Guardian had done before the Corruption of Memnarch, down to an exact copy of his original facial features, although by the time he was made, Memnarch's face had warped almost beyond recognition. Malil was initially made as a very stoic, patient, and obedient golem, but after he drank some serum, he started to become erratic, emotional, impatient, and aggressive. Built both as a bodyguard and as a scout, Malil contained a focus that allowed Memnarch to see through Malil's eyes with the Darksteel Eye.[1]
History
Malil was forged by Memnarch during the later stages of his rule over Mirrodin, sculpted in the image of Memnarch’s original, uncorrupted form. He was created as both a scout and enforcer — imbued with patient precision, unwavering loyalty, and the ability to act as Memnarch’s eyes via the Darksteel Eye embedded in his core. In the early years, Malil exhibited flawless obedience and dispassionate efficiency, a silent sentinel with no desires of his own.
However, exposure to serum — initially administered by Memnarch to enhance his intelligence and drive — began a slow but radical transformation. Over time, Malil’s golem mind fractured under the weight of emotions he wasn’t designed to process. He grew impatient, erratic, and driven by cravings for more serum, which he began to secretly siphon when unobserved. Physically, he began to change as well: patches of metal softened into pliant tissue, and his once flawless form showed signs of biological mutation. As Memnarch’s plans intensified, Malil led an assault against Glissa in the Razor Fields, commanding a full army of levelers. Though she fought fiercely, the battle only delayed her.[1]
Later, he confronted her again at the green lacuna, where he proved nearly unstoppable — his quicksilver-enhanced body instantly knitting together gaping wounds and even reattaching his severed hand mid-battle. Though Glissa managed to injure him severely, Malil survived and assisted in capturing and torturing Slobad, trying to pry vital knowledge from him for Memnarch’s ends.[2]
Over the five years that followed, Malil became a shadow of his former self. His flesh continued to grow, displacing the metal of his body; the once stoic golem had become a volatile, near-human creature — a twisted mirror of the Guardian he was based on. Still loyal to Memnarch, he nonetheless operated increasingly on his instincts, seeking more serum even as he pursued his master's will. Slobad, ever wary of him, suspected Malil’s private indulgence but never caught him in the act. Malil, in turn, taunted Slobad silently, whispering directly into his mind and combing through his thoughts with eerie familiarity.
Eventually, Malil intercepted Glissa mid-flight and tore the Miracore from her. With it in his possession, he made for the green lacuna, intent on delivering the artifact to Memnarch. But he was not unopposed. Raksha Golden Cub, waiting in ambush, struck first. Glissa, rallying from her wounds, joined him in the final battle. This time, Malil’s flesh body betrayed him — unable to regenerate as his quicksilver form once had, he fell under their blades. The construct who had become more than metal died a confused, broken thing, undone by the very transformation that once made him powerful.[2]
