Lord Pontifex was the Vedalken's most respected researcher on the plane of Mirrodin.[1]
Description
Pontifex's domed head towered over the surrounding humans, and his voluminous woven metallic robes swayed back and forth as he walked, covering and uncovering his extra arms. [2][3]
History
Pontifex was the owner of Donal, the father of Bruenna. Pontifex wanted to research how Donal would change after going into the Pool of Knowledge, but the council wanted Donal killed. He agreed to this to gain favor with the Synod. When Bruenna and Glissa ran into Pontifex within Lumengrid, he took them into his house as guests/prisoners to hand them over for a council seat.[2]
Pontifex, once a revered member of the vedalken Synod, became one of the most zealous and dangerous agents in service to Memnarch, though his true ambitions went far beyond mere servitude. Obsessed with control and the vedalken ideal of perfection, Pontifex took special interest in Glissa, whom he believed to be a threat to both vedalken dominance and Memnarch’s designs. He led the assault on Glissa's band in the Razor Fields, where he ordered his companion Marek to execute the elf, in direct violation of Memnarch’s command to capture her alive. The order shocked Marek, but Pontifex’s growing instability left little room for dissent.[3]
After the failed attack, Pontifex retreated with Marek and pursued Glissa through the Mephidross to the Vault of Whispers, where he launched another ambush. This assault also failed, thwarted by the awakening of Kaldra, whose arrival shattered the battlefield and forced Pontifex and his vedalken forces into a hasty retreat.[3]
Unwilling to abandon his pursuit, Pontifex descended into Mirrodin's Core, dispatching a sawtooth thresher battalion to intercept Glissa and her allies. By now, his obsession had grown into open treachery; he sought not to fulfill Memnarch’s will, but to usurp it, hoping to eliminate Glissa and claim her perceived power for himself. His betrayal did not go unnoticed. When Pontifex finally cornered Glissa and prepared to kill her, Marek intervened, having realized the extent of Pontifex’s defiance. The two former allies turned on one another in a brutal clash. Though Marek managed to wound Pontifex fatally, the vedalken struck back with his blade launchers, killing Marek in the same instant. Thus ended Pontifex’s bid for power, cut down by his closest ally in a final act of mutual destruction.[3]
