Stahaan is an island situated in the extreme northern reaches of the Domains on Dominaria.[1], as well as the name of the dominant tribe of minotaurs who live there.

Description

Locations

Locations on the island of Stahaan include:[2]

  • Boiling Lake - a hot spring lake that provides both a clean (if smelly) source of water and heat to its otherwise cold surroundings
    • Bathtown, a human trading post located on the shores of the lake.
  • The Boiling River - though not boiling, the river is formed from warm water from Boiling Lake running off to the ocean, its banks heavy with green trees.
  • Cryvern Peak - an icy and isolated mountain.
  • The Mirtiin Mountains - the southerly mountain range, where the Mirtiin live.
    • The Halls of Mirtiin - the main Mirtiin settlement, a large series of tunnels carved directly into the mountains
      • The Assembly Chamber - a large cave where clan representatives convene to discuss matters of importance.
      • The Great Maze - a labyrinth designed to deter and confuse invaders
      • The Great Way - a more direct passage to secure access and retreat
      • The Lamp of Passing Flames - a sacred clockwork device inside the temple that perpetually lights and extinguishes candles, symbolizing the unending cycle of minotaur life.
      • The Wells of Ashes - sacred chutes where the Mirtiin scatter the ashes of their dead, symbolizing their return to the heart of the mountain.
  • Null Divva, a remote human settlement known for its glass production.
  • The Stahaan Mountains - the northern mountain range, where the large Stahaan nation lives
    • The Holy Library - where the sacred texts of Lemeya are preserved and perused
    • The Well of Beginnings - a most revered holy site, source of the stone used for all the Wells of Ashes

Stahaan Society

Stahaan is home to a xenophobic and orthodox nation of minotaurs,[2][3] serving as a sister nation to the Mirtiin, who live in a different mountain range on the same island. The society is strictly governed by religious doctrine, led by the Speaker of Stone — a matriarch-priestess who acts as both a spiritual and political leader, though still subject to the nation's matriarch.

Stahaan minotaurs wear red or red-and-white garments as symbols of their identity. Adult males possess names ending in -ekst, while adult females bear names ending in -alem. They have four fingers on each hand, a trait they share with their cousins from Mirtiin but not with the five-fingered Hurloon minotaurs. The Hurloon minotaurs were exiled from Stahaan as heretics for their belief that humans and minotaurs share a common ancestor — a belief that contradicts Stahaan's scriptures. According to the first chapter of Knowing Purity, “By this shall you know the division: The fifth finger is flakkach.”

Stahaan’s strict orthodoxy is demonstrated by their concept of purrah, a ritualistic purity law that forbids the presence of flakkach (unclean beings), such as humans and goblins, within their halls. Violations of purrah are met with severe consequences.
