Battle of Kjeldor The Gathering Festival of the Arena

The Gathering was an event on Corondor in the year 3000 AR, which sparked off a new dating system: the Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad.

Description

In the year 3000 AR, at the northernmost habitable point of Corondor, the greatest magical minds of Dominaria assembled in the spires of Minorad. This summit, later known as The Gathering, marked the first formal convening of the Sages of Minorad — a collective of powerful wizards, druids, and scholars dedicated to the preservation of knowledge and the advancement of magical understanding. Among their number were five native Dominarian planeswalkers: Ash Warlord Embereck, Liana of Minorad, Altair of Coloni, Kristina of the Woods, and Grenfell Mor.

The purpose of The Gathering was twofold: first, to create a unified magical doctrine that would chronicle the mysteries of Dominaria, and second, to establish a timeline that would endure as the Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad — a new system of measuring history, beginning with the year 1 RSM (Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad). This system would later influence many magical traditions across Corondor and beyond.

The summit was attended by an unprecedented number of Dominaria’s finest spellcasters. Druids from the great forests, shamanic elders from the plains, and arcane scholars from distant lands all traveled to Minorad, drawn by the promise of shared wisdom and the chance to witness the foundation of a new magical era. Over weeks of discussion and debate, the Sages of Minorad laid down the principles of their order, formalizing the study of magic and recording their findings.

Among the most significant discussions were the nature of the multiverse, the ethical use of planeswalking, and the looming threat of extraplanar forces. Though many of the sages sought a peaceful era of learning, others, including Ash Warlord Embereck, warned of future conflicts that would test their resolve.

What began as a momentous occasion ended in catastrophe. Unbeknownst to the sages, Ravidel, a formidable battlemage and planeswalker, harbored deep resentment toward some of those assembled, particularly Kristina of the Woods. Years prior, Kristina had resurrected Ravidel after he died in battle against the dark forces of Leshrac and Tevesh Szat — a deed he had neither sought nor forgiven. Viewing the sages as weak and hypocritical, Ravidel, alongside his ally the Scarlet Vizier, launched a sudden and brutal assault on Minorad.

Though the sages fought valiantly, Ravidel wielded a weapon of devastating power — the Golgothian Sylex. Threatening to annihilate Minorad and all who opposed him, he forced the sages to submit to his will, binding them to an oath of non-interference in his future schemes. One by one, the sages were dealt harsh fates:

  • Altair of Coloni was bound to the land, stripped of his planeswalker abilities, and cursed to wander the plains of Corondor with no memory of his past.
  • Liana of Minorad was forced into servitude under the Scarlet Vizier, an unbreakable bond that would last for centuries.
  • Grenfell Mor was banished to the Sand Seas of Golthonor, far from his allies and his homeland.
  • Kristina of the Woods was confined to her enchanted forest, never to leave its borders without incurring Ravidel’s wrath.
  • Ash Warlord Embereck, disgusted by the sages’ surrender, abandoned the group entirely, vowing never to interfere with Ravidel’s plans but also never to forgive their cowardice.

With the sages scattered and bound by his decree, Ravidel declared himself unchallenged in his ambitions. Though Minorad survived the attack, it was left weakened, its greatest champions either exiled or broken in spirit.

Despite its tragic end, The Gathering left an enduring mark on history. Much of their work survived, while the Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad continued to be used as a method of dating significant events on Corondor. Though bound by Ravidel’s decree, the surviving sages continued their secret work, biding their time until the opportunity to defy their oppressor arose.[1]

Notes

  1. Though no precise date has been given, the Gathering was said to have happened as the very last vestiges of the Ice Age faded from the world, placing it at the end of the Flooding of Terisiare.
