The Mer Empire was a dominant force in the depths of the Otarian Sea off the southern tip of the continent of Otaria, on Dominaria.[1]
Description
The Mer Empire was more sophisticated than the land-bound cultures, with considerable magical forces held by its primary occupants, the cephalids, and an advanced governing body of aristocrats holding power under the imperial office. Cephalids were also skilled merchants, and the Mer Empire held a wealth of treasures and fine craftsmanship, giving them considerable clout among inland cultures. The Empire ran along the entire coast of the continent of Otaria.[2]
History
The Mer Empire was originally the location of Berbous, ruled by Emperor Tajaras. Betrayed by Laquatus and conquered by the cephalid king Aboshan, the Berbous civilization was wiped out in a single day, with Aboshan then instilling himself on the Coral Throne.[3]
The Mer Empire encircled the entire continent of Otaria. During the Battle for the Mirari in 4305 AR, Aboshan got hold of the Mirari. He attempted to increase the size of the empire by using the Mirari's power to smash and flood a stretch of the continent beneath the waves. Though he succeeded in his ambition, the act cost Aboshan his life.[4] The newly drowned land was named the Aboshan Trench by Aboshan's widow.
