Satoru Umezawa (oo-meh-ZAH-wah)[1] is a human ninja and leader of the Hyozan Reckoners.[2] He is part of the Clan Umezawa that is still in Kamigawa.
Description
Ruthless and efficient, Satoru is a master ninja covered in magical tattoos that he can freely manipulate.[2] Umezawa has a handsome face and the bright tattoos reach up to the bottom of his ears.[3][4] His black hair is wound in a tight bun and metal armor is latched strategically across his chest and arms, with windowed panels across his shoulders and stomach that show off his colorful markings. A gas mask hangs from his neck, neon green with painted blue swirls, making it look like the jaws of a monster. He appears to be left-handed or ambidextrous.[5]
Umezawa claims to be capable of picking any lock.[3] He carries several tools to help accomplish this, including a spiderlike device that can unlock safes, a metal origami device that can fold into a key, an origami dragonfly drone, and a retractable dagger.[6][7]
History
Umezawa is the ruthless leader of the Hyozan Reckoners, the largest and most well-known Reckoner gang on Kamigawa. Under his rule, the Hyozan Reckoners have grown bolder and more daring in their activities, sometimes even going so far as to attack Imperial patrols in their territory. Satoru is infamous for having once exterminated the family of another rival Reckoner who was thinking about challenging him, just to send a message. He claims to be a descendant of the fabled Toshiro Umezawa, a claim that no one has ever been able to verify, but that no one dares question, either.[8]
Neon Dynasty
Before becoming a planeswalker, Kaito Shizuki participated as a member of the Hyozan Reckoners in an attempt to gain information about the Emperor's whereabouts. It was Satoru who gave Kaito the mission to steal information about the technology that Tameshi has been developing. Suspicious of Kaito's loyalty, Satoru sent his henchmen to follow him.[4]
Satoru fought alongside Goro-Goro in defense of Kamigawa during New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.
Thunder Junction
When Omenpaths appeared on Kamigawa, Satoru was the first of his gang through one to the plane of Thunder Junction, hoping to expand his influence.[2] Unimpressed with what he saw, he was intercepted by the planeswalker Oko on his way out. Oko recruited him into his gang to assist in their planned heist on Maag Taranau by promising him magical technology from the vault, unlike anything Kamigawa had ever seen.[3] An incident occurred between him and Kaervek that led to enmity between the two of them. Later, they were both imprisoned by the Sterling Company, the lawkeeping entity on the plane.
Kaervek and Satoru were later broken out of prison by Eriette and the newly recruited Annie Flash.[3] Kaervek escaped while Satoru stayed back to assist Oko in the main goal of the raid: securing a key to Maag Taranau from the company head's office. Oko offered to help Satoru escape with shapechanging magic, but he declined, not trusting the faerie. In a subsequent raid on a locomotive, Umezawa was shot in the shoulder, but was later stitched up by Geralf.[6][9]
Oko eventually secured the complete key and opened the vault for their benefactor Ashiok.[7] However, when they got what they wanted out of the vault, they revealed themself to be Jace Beleren under an illusion and planeswalked away without paying the gang. They were also unable to take the vault's treasure as a reward since it flew into the air after Jace triggered a trap. Displeased with this outcome, Satoru told Oko that he would be willing to team up with him again for a greater prize or to get revenge against Jace, but warned him that he would ask for triple the fee upfront.
