The Battle for Zendikar The Creation of New Phyrexia Siege of Thraben

The Creation of New Phyrexia was the climactic end of the Mirran–Phyrexian War, occurring in 4557 AR, when the plane of Mirrodin was overtaken by Phyrexians. The event saw the once-ordered, metallic world transformed into a fortress of corruption, restructured into nine biomechanical spheres. Mirrodin’s native inhabitants were hunted, enslaved, or Compleated, while the surviving Mirrans, led by Koth of the Hammer, formed the Mirran Resistance, mounting a desperate stand even as their world fell.

Description

Created by the silver golem Karn as the artificial plane Argentum, and later renamed Mirrodin following the corruption of Memnarch, the world was shaped by artifacts and inhabited by diverse races. Deep beneath the surface lay a reservoir of glistening oil, a self-replicating Phyrexian agent inadvertently brought by Karn himself. Over time, the oil began to spread, corrupting the plane from within.

Following the Temporal crisis of Dominaria and the Mending, Karn’s Planeswalker spark faded, leaving him vulnerable to the oil's influence. Though it could not fully Compleat him, it rendered him confused and inert. Eventually, he was captured and held in the plane's core by Glissa and Tezzeret, who sought to hasten Phyrexia's rebirth.

As the infection spread, Phyrexian forces began to overtake key regions of the plane, using the corruption of areas like the Mephidross to weaken the surface and sow disarray. Planeswalkers Elspeth Tirel and Venser, drawn to the plane by Koth, joined the search for Karn and helped lead the defense. In the final moments of the war, Venser sacrificed himself to restore Karn’s spark and mind, enabling the golem to reject the Phyrexian influence and escape.

Despite this, the Phyrexians ultimately achieved victory. The plane was fully seized and transformed into New Phyrexia, restructured into nine vertical spheres, each dominated by a distinct praetor faction: the Machine Orthodoxy (led by Elesh Norn), the Progress Engine (Jin-Gitaxias), the Vicious Swarm (Vorinclex), the Seven Steel Thanes (Sheoldred), and the Quiet Furnace (Urabrask).

The transformation reshaped the entire ecosystem of the plane. Native flora and fauna were forcibly Compleated into grotesque Phyrexian hybrids. The Mirran Resistance—comprising surviving sylvok, vulshok, leonin, elves, and other native peoples—continued to fight from hidden refuges within the deeper spheres.

The Creation of New Phyrexia marked a turning point in the Mending Era, laying the groundwork for the plane’s ambitions to extend far beyond its artificial skies and threaten the greater Multiverse.
