The Steel Mother or Great Mother[1] was a deity in the religion of the goblins of the Oxidda Chain on Mirrodin.[2]
Description
The Steel Mother was an earth goddess worshiped by Mirrodin's goblins.[3] They believed the Sky Tyrant was the mighty hammer that forged the body of the Steel Mother, and blinkmoths were the sparks from the forge. The blinkmoths' omnipresence represented the continuous addition of new metal and life to the goblins' Mother.
As they were partially composed of metal, goblins believed the Steel Mother had created them.[3] It was thought that she controlled the metal world and that all who died were returned to the Steel Mother. Metal was sacrificed to her in the pools of hot, liquid metal in Kuldotha. The dead were also thrown in to return them to the Steel Mother, and criminals or children born under the Blue Moon - who were believed to be cursed - were hurled into the fiery pits of Kuldotha.[4] The molten metal was reclaimed from these bodies and reforged into weapons and "ancestor machines."
The goblin shaman Krark ventured into the Great Furnace to learn the truth of Steel Mother and was executed for his heresy, and his followers were excommunicated.[2]
