Lumengrid, Seat of the Synod, was a massive city-stronghold on Mirrodin, and the capital of the Vedalken Empire.[1]
Description
Lumengrid looked like an immense mushroom sitting on the sea. The central tower was larger around than the entire crystal island chain. The dome top spread out from the central tower on either side, seeming to reach out to the horizon. Sitting atop the dome was a massive orb. It looked like a fifth moon — a silver moon — in the sky. Electricity arced out from it, filling the sky with a network of lightning that stretched to the surrounding islands —several dozen smaller towers clustered around the fortress. A system of bridges connected the lesser towers together. The lightning, towers, and bridges looked as if they were all joined together like a giant spider web.[2]
Lumengrid was the capital of the vedalken empire and a center of technology and artifice on the plane, a crystal and chrome structure rising above the Quicksilver Sea on a massive cylinder with a mushroom-like dome at its top.[3] The Synod, a gathering of vedalken rulers and officials, was housed here, along with the Pool of Knowledge. This was also the primary area inhabited by common vedalken. Neurok from the coast of the Quicksilver Sea were brought here to help with lab work, exploration of the plane, or to work as slaves, as well as various other exploits of the Vedalken Empire. Aerophins, flying artifact creatures with a dolphinlike body and a translucent sphere for a head, were used as servants.[4] Lumengrid was guarded by Hoverguards and Wanderguards.[5] The Synod would gather in the Grand Assembly Chamber to discuss important matters and decide how to approach them.[6]
History
At the Battle of the Synod, the Neurok were able to disable vedalken defenses at Lumengrid, leading to a massive battle that left hundreds — including the members of the vedalken leadership — dead on both sides.[5] Afterward, the two cultures entered an uneasy truce, in which both inhabited Lumengrid. The vedalken primarily inhabited the upper portions of Lumengrid, and the lower, broader portion of the city was populated by Neurok.
After the Phyrexianization of the plane, Lumengrid became the capital of Jin-Gitaxias Progress Engine.
