The Autonomous Furnace is the third sphere of New Phyrexia, aligned with red mana. A blistering crucible of molten metal, this layer served as the Phyrexians’ first stronghold and staging ground during their invasion of Mirrodin.[1] Constantly alive with fire and industry, the Furnace is a battleground of clashing ideals, with its machinery repurposed both for Phyrexian conquest and for resistance efforts led by Urabrask and remnants of the Mirran Resistance.

Description

Also known as the Furnace Layer, the Autonomous Furnace is a vast red-aligned sphere of rivers and seas of magma, flowing through and beneath shelves of pyroclastic stone. The atmosphere is suffocatingly hot, and its burning pools experience sharp thermoclines that divide scalding layers of molten material.[2]

The Furnace was the first layer established by the Phyrexians, even before their open invasion of the plane.[1] It played a pivotal role in their early victory, serving as a foundry for crafting the metal components used in the compleation of Mirrans.

Despite functioning as a singular industrial engine, the Autonomous Furnace is subdivided into many regions, each controlled by different furnace bosses. These factions operate with little coordination and often clash with one another, creating tension even within Phyrexian ranks.

The rebel praetor Urabrask and his faction of Phyrexians, known as the Quiet Furnace, reside here. Notable sites in the sphere include Urabrask’s Forge, the rebellious stronghold from which Urabrask waged his silent opposition to Elesh Norn.[3], and the Salvage Complex, a repurposed Phyrexian prison overseen by Slobad. Here, Slobad and his allies attempted to reclaim and reconfigure obsolete Phyrexian constructs for use against their creators.[3]
