Quintorius "Quint" Kand is a male loxodon and mage-student of the Lorehold college of Strixhaven on Arcavios.[1] During New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse, his spark ignited, and he became a planeswalker.[2][3][4]
Appearance and characteristics
Quint is a positive, upbeat, nerdy guy who is easily excitable and much more likely to talk your ears off than use a sword. He has a big, imposing body, but also a high-pitched voice and a dweeby, boyish charm. Quint can be quite nervous and sometimes be kind of a mess.[5]
Quint's mind is piled high with facts and knowledge that might become useful. Being a Lorehold student, his magic usually comes from scrolls or a tome; blasting out like bladed sharp paper golden energy.[6]
He views the accuracy of historical accounts as extremely important. He is an expert loremaster. The truth is also a priority to him as it enables the preservation of facts rather than myths.
Quintorius has access to white and red mana.
History
Youth
Quint was born as the son of a poor nomadic shepherd. He'd always known that he could cause things to move, twist and turn, and suddenly fall at opportune times. At home, he'd used these magical gifts to stop runaway sheep from straying too far from the flock. Before he began his study at Strixhaven he unsuccessfully attended the Rundlestrom Military Academy where he had been expelled because of his clumsiness.[7][8]
At Strixhaven
Realizing he enjoyed the study of military history more than the military itself, Quint joined Strixhaven University.[9] As a student, he spends most of his time inside the grand Biblioplex digging through old books for his research. He attended Strixhaven University on a scholarship but supplemented his remaining tuition fees by working on a dig site with a team of researchers. Quint wished to learn about the history and past of the Loxodon race by uncovering great unknowns. He studied hard to make a name for himself and his family. While being a committed student, he suffered from wanderlust, always feeling the need and desire to travel and explore. He wanted to find out who he truly was and believed he could do so through his expeditions to significant historical places. With the help of his spirit mentor Asterion, Quint rediscovered the lost Loxodon city of Zantafar in the caves nearby Strixhaven.[8]
New Phyrexia's Invasion of Arcavios
When New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse started, the Phyrexians quickly burned through the defenses of Strixhaven. Professor Vess tasked a small group of surviving students - Quint, Zimone Wola, Rootha Squallheart, Dina and Killian Lu - to search for the Invocation of the Founders in the Biblioplex. The group found it and with a representative from each school they could activate it, but the compleated Nassari distracted Rootha enough that Quint could only try to make up her contribution with raw magic and lifeforce. The result was not entirely successful, and in the process, Quint's spark ignited and he planeswalked away.[2]
Through the Multiverse
Dropping out of Strixhaven before his graduation, Quint used his newfound spark to explore the various planes of the Multiverse.[10] On his travels he discovered a mysterious coin motif prevalent across many planes he traveled to, which he believed was evidence of an enigmatic planar-spanning civilization that he dubbed the Coin Empire.[11]
On Ixalan
A year later, Quint appeared on the plane of Ixalan.[12] He traveled there at the behest of Saheeli Rai to investigate the existence of a civilization that predates all others on the plane. Upon arrival, Quint was welcomed by Wayta and brought to an ancient temple where he helped Huatli solve a puzzle and gain access to the plane's caverns. Delving down, they came upon an ancient city, where Quint used his magic to reanimate the spirit of a man named Abuelo. Following the spirit, they were suddenly attacked by mycoids. They were nearly overwhelmed until members of the River Heralds appeared and swept them to safety in an underground river. They emerged in an ancient underground city.
The River Heralds explained that they had been investigating a door in the city that they believed to lead to Ixalan's legendary Core. With Abuelo's help, they were able to open the door and gain access to the Core. Once inside, the Sun Empire party began diplomacy with the Oltecs who lived there, but the negotiations were interrupted when the vampires that the party had been traveling with broke out of the Oltecs' prison and went to find the ancient bat god Aclazotz. Before they could stop them, Aclazotz was released and turned the vampires into powerful demons under his control. The two armies clashed, with the vampires ultimately defeated and Aclazotz fleeing from the Core.
A week later, after the Empire forces helped the Oltec repair from the demonic invasion, Quint met with the Oltecs' didacts, priests charged with keeping their nation's history. They led him to a ruin called the Colony's End, left behind by a force that had invaded the Core in the distant past. He found little he was able to understand but came across a giant creature similar to a corpse he had seen much nearer to the surface. However, it suddenly moved when Quint approached it, prompting him to planeswalk away.[13]
