Lorehold is the College of Archaeomancy at Strixhaven University on the plane of Arcavios. It is aligned and uses Spirits as mascots. The founder of the college is the elder dragon Velomachus Lorehold.[1]
Description
Loreholds are known for their relentless dedication to research as well as their adventurous spirit. They are passionate scholars who focus intensely on history, often delving into the mysteries of the past by carefully studying archaeological relics and calling forth the spirits of those long gone. For many Lorehold students, history is a vast and intricate tapestry that demands careful and disciplined examination. Others, however, choose to embody that history more boldly, using it as a source of inspiration to leap headfirst into ancient ruins and forgotten tombs.[2]
The academic focus of Lorehold centers on exploring the interconnectedness of human nature through fields like psychology, anthropology, and archaeology. Their studies often revolve around understanding whether societies are primarily shaped by the physical structures they create, which aligns with white magic, or by the social bonds and relationships they form, represented by red magic.
Lorehold College is where student-mages are driven scholars, engrossed in history. They explore and research the past through artifacts and call on magical energies from ancient tomes. Those who are a part of Lorehold will happily travel long and far to find ancient relics. Their goal is to learn the secrets of history, and it is not uncommon for a student of Lorehold to summon the spirits of their dead historical figures. Their college motto is "Leave No Stone Unturned".[3]
The Lorehold use their magic to bring history literally to life as they summon ancient figures from the past and bring them into the present.[1][4] Their magic is written, more specifically, historically written lore and codices, as opposed to Silverquill's self-written and spoken magic.
Campus Locations

The Lorehold campus lies northwest of the central campus, set in a landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes. Towering mesas and steep hills rise from the surrounding plain, while a vast chasm contains the excavated remnants of an ancient settlement. Scattered star arches ring the rocky peaks and outcrops, standing as evidence of the potent magical forces in the area — energies once wielded by the ancients who lived there.[5]
- Effigy Row - a main campus area and the center of Lorehold. Its pathways are lined with monuments of famous historical figures, including past professors and prominent mage-students as well as war heroes and heads of state from ages past.[6][5]
- Kollema Hall
- a grand, multi-tiered gallery and lecture hall with an imposing spire,[6] where Lorehold mages gather for large lectures and demonstrations. Thousand-foot-long scrolls spill over the balconies as mages study ancient texts. The center of Kollema Hall is the magnificently restored statue of Kollema, the wise monk who was one of the first Lorehold professors at the founding of Strixhaven.[7][8][5]
- Pillardrop
- a unique blend of natural chasm, archaeological dig site, and modern construction. Its structures — carved directly into cliff faces — include a mix of ancient ruins and renovated halls now used for housing, classes, and research. Narrow, often precarious bridges connect the various sections, frequently passing by the massive stone faces of ancient statues. Each Lorehold class seems to have its tale of a student who misjudged a step on one of these spans or in a crumbling ruin, sometimes leading to disaster, and other times to an unexpected rescue by a spirit statue that materializes just in time.[5]
- Archaeo Memorial Hall
- the primary administrative building on the campus, the hall is one of the cliffside buildings of Pillardrop. It is set up to be used as offices for Lorehold faculty.[5]
- Lorehold Deans' Wing
- a portion of the first floor, where the two largest offices are located, reserved for the college's two deans, of Order and Chaos. The wing also features part of Lorehold's extensive historical archives.[5]

Colors Dichotomy
Red
The red mages of Lorehold gravitate toward reckless discovery and the spirit of adventure in their research of the past: the essence and emotion of history over precision or procedure. Cliffbusters and ruin shamans wield magic that helps them delve into the remains of ancient sites. Chaos scholars, trivialists, and absurdophiles chase down anecdotes of history as a ridiculous litany of chance happenstance. Warlores get excited about the magic that was used in the wars of the Blood Age. Dustspeakers and heroscorns love to converse with the spirits of the past to find the whole ugly truth about them, foibles, frailties, and all. Scrollbashers and tomewielders use history in a pretty literal way: by summoning magic directly from the characters scrawled in their pages, or by bashing fools with heavy books. Plargg is the red-aligned Orc dean of Lorehold.
White The white side is represented by antiquarians, truthfinders, and archaeoscribes who love to uncover and record the past; they're often surrounded by lengthy scrolls and tomes in which they chronicle historical truths for posterity. Relic readers, aeonmancers, and monument priests uncover ruined statues of ancient historical figures, divining wisdom from the past from the context of ruin sites. Iconologists, pastraisers, and ghost advocates bind spirits into the monuments that bear their likeness, conversing with them to learn about their great and inspiring deeds. Battle mediums and spiritualists can strengthen and empower summoned spirits for use in battle. Conservators, pastquoters, docents, and curators preserve and care for ancient spell knowledge, artifacts, and other relics of the past on the Lorehold campus. Honorbringers and allusionists can draw on the truths of history to enhance, inspire, or empower allies, whereas ruleciters and canonists use historical precedent to enforce magical laws.[7] Augusta is Lorehold's white-aligned dean.
Mascots
Lorehold mages supplement their study of history by calling on the spirits of the ancient dead. While dustspeakers and pastraisers conjure spirits and interview them for knowledge of the past, battle mediums and other Lorehold mages sometimes draw on the magical power of those spirits or turn them into hardy soldiers by housing the spirits in statues depicting their living selves.[7]
