Daretti is a goblin planeswalker from the plane of Fiora. He was the master and suspected murder victim of the artificer Muzzio.[2] He lost his spark in the Desparkening.
Appearance and characteristics
Daretti is a short but sturdy goblin with green skin, brown eyes, auburn hair, and big, pointy ears.[1][3] He is a master artificer skilled at finding treasure where others see only trash. Unable to use his legs, he uses a cogwork wheelchair known as a cogchair. Seated in his chair, Daretti reaches 6 feet in height. He suffers from chronic pain as a result of his accident and is in the habit of drinking herbal tea to manage it.[4]
Daretti is primarily red-aligned, but secondary in black mana.
History
Daretti grew up as a poor goblin in Paliano's Lowlands.[1] From an early age, his goal in life was both simple and audacious: to become a master artificer at the Academy in the High City of Paliano. An artificer of surprising intellect, talent, and ambition, he used scraps to create devices more intricate than Paliano's most experienced inventions. Despite prejudices against goblinkind, he rose through the ranks to become a tenured professor, evoking the gossip of the city’s mage elite. Soon, gossip turned to irritation, and later, to outright disdain. While Fiora is a plane of cunning and shadowy games, it was not their plotting that led to his downfall, but a malfunction of Daretti’s experiments.
One of Daretti's cogwork constructs exploded, apparently killing him. Daretti's apprentice Muzzio was blamed for the artificer's death, allowing the Academy to remove two troublesome members. In reality, the explosion ignited Daretti's Planeswalker's spark, and he planeswalked to relative safety. Although he escaped with his life, the accident was not without cost, leaving Daretti without the use of his legs. As a true artificer, he built an elaborate cogwork rig that assisted him in movement and continuing his experiments in artifice, both on Fiora and beyond.[5]
When Marchesa was crowned queen of Paliano after Brago had been assassinated by the planeswalker Kaya, Daretti allied with several disenfranchised goblins under the leadership of Grenzo, former dungeon warden, to take revenge on those that had wronged them. His schemes were responsible for the disbanding of the Academy, as he tipped Grenzo, the palace's goblin prison warden, off to Muzzio's storehouse of cogwork warriors. He helped instigate the goblin riots to overturn Paliano's current leadership and root out the academy's former members lying low in the city. Together with Grenzo, he raided the home of Professor Fimarell, gathering his books to burn them. When intercepted by the city guards, Daretti discovered that the professor had plagiarized some of his designs. After killing Fimarell, he and the other goblins turned their attention to the former academy members who opposed him and have now fallen in league with the new Queen.[6]
Phyrexian invasion
During New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse, Daretti fought and defeated many Phyrexian warriors, considering their artifice inelegant.[7]
Ghirapur Grand Prix
In the Desparkening, Daretti lost his spark and was stranded on Avishkar.[8] He became the adoptive benefactor and unofficial co-captain of the Goblin Rocketeers to compete in the second Ghirapur Grand Prix.[9] He bankrolled the team in the hopes of discovering a new means of interplanar travel after the loss of his spark. His efforts advanced their technology by literal leaps and bounds. Only afterward did he consider that perhaps arming a bunch of trigger-happy goblins with advanced ballistics and highly flammable chemical propellants was risky. Thanks to their powerful engines, the Rocketeers stayed at the head of the pack throughout the first three legs of the race, but this was to their detriment in the third leg through Muraganda, when they were the first to cross a trap laid on the course by saurid raiders. Daretti's situation worsened further when the other Rocketeers used him as a decoy to cover their escape.[3] He was taken to a saurid village and imprisoned alongside Loot to be offered as a sacrifice.
Daretti and Loot briefly acquainted themselves before they were rescued by Chandra and Pia Nalaar, who had witnessed Loot's capture at the hands of the saurids.[3] Daretti quickly patched together his car, and Chandra drove it away from the village. The four barely managed to escape through an Omenpath to Amonkhet located by Loot, but they emerged some distance from the ground and the car was seriously damaged in the landing.[4] However, in a matter of hours, Daretti and Pia patched it up effectively enough that it would be capable of finishing the race. Loot also directed them to an Omenpath shortcut. When they arrived, they witnessed an attempted Consulate coup by Mohar Varma, and Daretti backed Chandra up as she fought against the insurgents. Ultimately, the coup was prevented, although the Rocketeers did not place in the race.
Artifacts acquired
- Daretti's cogchair, which he uses to get around.[1] Besides its massive cogwheels, the chair is equipped with a variety of manipulator arms that can be used in artifice, for maneuvering over rough terrain, or in combat.

- Daretti had a planeswalker card in War of the Spark vision design, but R&D ended up having too many red planeswalkers to do them all.[11]
