Specialize is a designed-for-digital, MTG Arena-specific mechanic introduced in Alchemy Horizons: Baldur's Gate.
Description
Specialize is mostly seen on reimagined cards. They feature a circled upward pointing triangle in the upper left corner of the card, indicating that it is able to transform.[1] The ability resembles a D&D character's choice of classes during a campaign.
You may pay mana and discard a card of your choice to transform the card with Specialize into one of five different other cards, one for each color. Basic land types are included to determine this outcome. This makes it essentially a sextuple-faced card. Once Specialized, the creature gains an extra mana symbol in its mana cost and an ability of the appropriate color, most of which are similar structurally. Those with passive abilities retain them, perhaps with an upgrade, while those with entry abilities tend to gain something that synergizes with the value gained from entering.
It is possible to "unspecialize", such as on Lukamina, Moon Druid.
