Reminder Text Mummify [cost] ((Cost), Exile this card from your graveyard: Create a 2/2 black Zombie token that deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters. Mummify only as a sorcery.)

Mummify was a graveyard mechanic designed for Amonkhet. It was never released, eventually evolving into Embalm.

Description

R&D created this mechanic when designing top down for the Egyptian-themed set, Amonkhet.

Mummify went on creatures and was an activated ability usable only in the graveyard that allowed you to exile it to make a 2/2 black Zombie token with wither. It was ultimately not used because the Zombie tokens were feeling a bit too similar to what Shadows over Innistrad was doing with Zombies.[1]

The idea of mummification remained and eventually became the technically more challenging but more diverse Embalm.
