Timeline
Crovax's Coronation Prophecy War Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria

The Prophecy War was an event that took place on the the northern shores of the contient of Jamuraa in 4205 AR shortly before the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria.[1]

Description

The Prophecy War was a conflict that erupted in northern Jamuraa shortly before the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria. It was primarily fought between the Keldons and the Kipamu League, a coalition of city-states from northern Jamuraa. Though minor in scale compared to the world-shaking events that followed, the Prophecy War was a bloody, resource-driven conflict with deep cultural and ideological roots — and one that helped reveal the growing instability across the plane.

The war was precipitated by a faction within Keld, led by Overseer Latulla and Warlord Druik, who convinced much of the Keldon populace that parts of Jamuraa — especially its mineral-rich coast — were once ancestral Keldon lands. Of particular interest to Latulla was "Hero’s Blood", or tufa, a magical mineral that formed from the remains of ancient warriors. It was both a powerful symbolic substance and a literal fuel for Keldon war engines and necromantic rituals. Latulla believed the substance would be essential in awakening the Witch-Kings — legendary warlords of Keldon prophecy — from their slumber in the Keldon Necropolis.

The invasion of Jamuraa began with swift and brutal raids along the coastline. Keldon forces razed villages, captured hostages, and established a permanent settlement to begin exploiting local resources. The Kipamu League, lacking a unified command structure, was initially unable to mount an effective resistance. Latulla, meanwhile, empowered her war machines with the help of Greel, a life-draining mutant whose powers added an atmosphere of fear and dread to the campaign.

In response to the deteriorating situation, Barrin, the Master Wizard and a key figure in Dominaria’s defense efforts, was dispatched by planeswalker Teferi to reorganize the League’s forces. He worked alongside Mageta the Lion and other key figures, including Rayne, his wife and a gifted artificer, and Jolrael, a powerful nature mage native to Jamuraa. While the League slowly gained ground, the war stagnated, and both sides suffered heavily.

Despite the ongoing campaign, much of the middle phase of the war was marked by skirmishes, tactical missteps, and occasional magical and monster-based incidents that failed to shift the overall balance of power. The most pivotal moment in the war occurred not in Jamuraa but in Keld itself. Latulla returned there in an attempt to awaken the Witch-Kings and fulfill the ancient Prophecy of the Keldon Twilight, which foretold the return of Keld’s greatest champions during a time of great need. However, her actions were condemned by the Warlords’ Council, and she was confronted by Doyenne Gorsha at the gates of the Necropolis. In ritual combat, Gorsha killed Druik and defeated Latulla, denying her access and declaring her actions treasonous. Latulla and her followers were exiled from Keld, forced to return to Jamuraa and continue the war without homeland support.

Upon returning to Jamuraa, the exiled Keldons attempted a desperate counteroffensive, but by then, the Kipamu League had solidified its defenses and their race to develop military superiority with armed airships. In the final battle, Rayne discovered that Greel was the source of the Phyrexian plague that had started to spread to the land, the animals, and the people of Northern Jamuraa. Greel confronted and killed Rayne, and Latulla was gravely wounded when her war barge overturned by a massive spell cast by Teferi. Barrin found his wife crushed and decapitated and faced Greel over her corpse. Barrin used a cascading spark spell to dissolve Greel into minute parts, killing him. Barrin then spotted Latulla crushed under her wagon. Mistaking the wizard for a slave, she demanded aid — but Barrin, enraged by the death of Rayne during the war, executed Latulla instead, decapitating her as poetic justice.

The Prophecy War left deep emotional and political consequences. Though victorious, the Kipamu League had suffered devastating losses. For Barrin, the death of his wife and the brutal toll of the war left him embittered and increasingly disillusioned with Urza's grand plan to combat Phyrexia. Teferi, similarly shaken by the widespread destruction and what he perceived as Urza’s indifference, began to withdraw from Urza’s coalition. Determined to protect his homeland on his terms, Teferi resolved to act independently during the coming Phyrexian Invasion, even if it meant opposing Urza's strategy.[1]
