Johan's War was an event that occurred in 3334-3336 AR on the southwestern subcontinent of Jamuraa on the plane of Dominaria.
Description
Johan's War was a conflict between the city-state of Bryce, governed by Hazezon Tamar, and the Emperor-tyrant Johan from Tirras, although many surrounding lands like Palmyra, the merfolk of the Sunken Sea, the cat warriors of Efrava, the pine folk of Arboria and the elves of Scarwood became embroiled in the war's proceedings. The war began when Johan’s forces attacked Bryce, and Hazezon, aided by a mysterious tiger-man named Jaeger Ojanen, led a defense with the help of Hazezon's magical sand warriors. Although the attack on Bryce was halted, Johan’s forces continued to amass in Tirras, and Hazezon sought an alliance with several other city-states, including his ex-wife, Adira Strongheart of Palmyra.[1]
Palmyra initially refused to help due to its neutrality but was eventually drawn into the war after a botched ambush. The Robaran Mercenaries, led by Adira, launched raids to finance the war, capturing ships and forging an alliance with islanders. Back in Palmyra, the construction of a dam disrupted the ecosystem, leading to attacks from merfolk who were later appeased through a pact. Meanwhile, Johan's army destroyed the dam, making it easier for his forces to advance. In a last-ditch effort to halt Johan, Hazezon used powerful magic to alter the flow of the River Toloron, forcing Johan’s army to retreat. However, Johan, undeterred, turned his sights on Palmyra and besieged the city. Hazezon summoned a great sandstorm that devastated Johan’s forces, but the city also suffered heavy losses. Jaeger confronted Johan but was killed by a sandworm.[1]
Johan, having crossed the desert on a drake, was saved from a sand wurm by Jaeger's son Jedit Ojanen. However, due to Efravan law, Johan was imprisoned for execution. Jedit and his lover Hestia managed to delay the punishment, allowing Johan to roam freely while they watched over him, but upon returning to the village, Johan escaped, and Jedit followed him, determined to learn the truth about his father's death. Johan and Jedit eventually reached Palmyra, where Johan deceived Jedit into thinking Jaeger had allied with the Tirras army. He used magic to unleash Jedit’s bloodlust, sending him to fight Hazezon and Adira. The magic conflicted, allowing the Robarans to reveal that Jaeger was their friend. Enraged, Jedit pursued Johan, and after discovering Johan had Jaeger's medallion, he almost killed him. However, Johan summoned Beasts of Bogardan to escape.
In the Western Wastes, Johan received a vision from Shauku, who invited him to her library in Arboria. Adira, Jedit, and the Robarans followed Johan's trail, reaching Buzzard's Bay, where they learned of Johan's crimes. At Shauku's ruined castle, Johan was tricked into an enchantment and imprisoned near a cosmic horror. Shauku revealed as a vampire, explained that she had manipulated Johan to enslave him and use him to control Jamuraa. Meanwhile, Adira’s group befriended the Arborian pinefolk and infiltrated the castle, finding Johan's prison. After Adira accidentally freed Johan, the group escaped as the cosmic horror summoned a Falling Star to destroy the castle. Having survived the destruction, Adira, Jedit, and the remaining Seveners prepared to return home and stop Johan’s conquest.[2]
Johan sought to expand his dominion by constructing a fleet of airships powered by powerstones. His goal was to launch a massive invasion against Bryce, Efrava, and the surrounding regions. After months of struggle, espionage, and gathering allies—including elven refugees from Scarwood, freebooters from Koltos, and even some of Johan’s oppressed Tirran subjects — the resistance managed to secure a fleet of their airships and prepare for battle. The war reached its climax in Efrava, where Johan’s forces laid siege to the jungle oasis. In a series of desperate engagements, Jedit’s coalition waged a prolonged guerrilla campaign until reinforcements from Bryce and Scarwood arrived. Though Johan’s air fleet still held the advantage, the resistance launched a daring assault on the emperor’s flagship. In the final confrontation, Johan slew Adira but was ultimately dragged from the sky by Jedit. As he prepared to strike the killing blow, the emperor was devoured by a colossal sand wurm, mirroring the fate of Jedit’s father. With Johan dead, the Tirrans collapsed into disarray, and the war came to an end. In the aftermath, Hazezon resumed his rule of Bryce before departing to explore the world, while Jedit led the Robarans into a new era of expansion, securing a lasting legacy for the tiger tribes of Jamuraa.[3]
