The Fall of Arathoxia was an event in 4195 AR[a] instigated by the planeswalker Ravidel, seeking absolute rule over Corondor.
Description
Ravidel's attack on Arathoxia was a calculated move driven by his desire for dominion. When the city's leader, the Grand Sultan of Arathoxia, refused to submit to the planeswalker's demands, Ravidel chose to annihilate the city, aiming to eliminate all his enemies in one fell swoop, including the teenaged Jared Carthalion.
The assault was met by the heads of the four non-red houses of Arathoxia: Lady Verdenth of House Verdenth, Tobias Kavrel of House Kavrel, Marshal Bikov of House Bikov, and the enigmatic Lord of House Khone. Despite their combined efforts, Ravidel's power proved overwhelming, and the houses fell in rapid succession. His juggernauts smashed the city gates, and his demonic hordes overran their defenses. Tobias Kavrel's ivory tower was toppled by demons, and Bikov's sapphire manse, along with the port district, was obliterated by a giant Chaos Orb cast by Ravidel.
Lady Verdenth, mistress of Krysalthus Forest, recalled her past mercy when she spared Jared's life as an infant, yet her efforts to repel Ravidel's forces failed, leading to her death and the destruction of her emerald tower. The Scarlet Vizier, caught between loyalties, was executed by Ravidel for his perceived betrayal, leaving Jared grappling with the revelation that the vizier may have played a role in his mother's death.
Amid the chaos as Ravidel destroyed the last house, the Black Fortress, Jared joined forces with Yorgo and Nikko, former tormentors turned allies, to save innocent lives. His confrontation with the dying Scarlet Vizier revealed the presence of Liana of Minorad, a shapeshifter whose true nature and connection to Jared's past made him seek out Ezer, stuck in a hospice behind a line of scathe zombies. Jared and his team of urchins killed the undead and rescued the old spellsquire, then confronted Ravidel on the streets. Liana of Minorad intervened in the near-duel, locking Jared away in a cage while Ravidel went on to destroy the sultan's palace.
Although all five houses and the palace itself were destroyed, Ravidel was not successful in killing all his enemies. The city's sultan, the Lord of House Khone, Jared, and Liana all made it out of the city's fall. Ravidel's wrath left the city a smoking ruin, haunted by survivors, looters, and bandits like Yorgo, while Jared swore vengeance against Ravidel, seeking retribution for the loss of his parents and his shattered home.[1]
Notes
- ↑ The date of the battle given in the comic the Shadow Mage is 1280 in the Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad. This has later been refuted by placing the battle on the timeline in 4195 AR, which would correspond to 1195 in the Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad, assuming the Reckoning still starts at year 3000 AR.
