The Founding of the Tolarian Academy was an event that occurred in 3285 AR on the island of Tolaria, on the plane of Dominaria, when Urza and Barrin established the Tolarian Academy to intensively research and experiment in their escalating conflict against the Phyrexians. This was a change from Urza's previously more reactive stance following the deaths of Xantcha, Ratepe and Gix.

Description

The Academy was used by its founders to train an elite cadre of mages to lead the plane's defense in the upcoming Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria and to conduct research into weapons that could be used in the war. Although originally run by Urza himself, as it expanded others such as Jhoira, and Barrin's wife Rayne, assumed chancellorship, especially as Urza's missions took him on longer and further journeys throughout the planes. Notable students of the academy include Teferi, Jhoira, Gatha, Ertai, and Hanna. As a critical turn in the focus of Dominaria's activities for hundreds of years, the founding of the academy marks the start of a new historical era for the plane - the War with Phyrexia. This first version of the academy would last for 22 years until it was destroyed in the Tolarian temporal disaster.
