The Night of Fire was an event that happened in the city of Estark on Dominaria.

Background

The Grand Master Kuthuman had ordered a great tribute of mana from every house for his ascension. The House of Oor-tael refused to contribute their blue and green mana. Zarel Ewine conspired with the other four houses to destroy them so he could become the Grand Master.[1]

Massacre

On the final evening of the 978th Festival of the Arena, after the games had ended, the massacre occurred.[2] The dwarf Uriah Aswark betrayed his house, giving away its secrets and unbarring the house's gates.[3] Zarel Ewine and the four conspiring houses stormed the grounds and set fire to all its buildings. Cullinarn and countless others burned alive in the walls of the House. He teleported his wife and child, Galin, far away. The blue and green mana was brought to Kuthuman, and he completed his ascension, leaving Zarel the Grand Master, with Uriah as his second.

Aftermath

After the massacre, Zarel had any former member, suspected former member, or person who conversed with or harbored such a person arrested.[4] A bounty of one hundred gold was placed on any servant, mistress, or mate, five hundred for a warrior, and a thousand for a fighter. Their tongue would be cut out immediately, and then they would be executed. Fighters would be imprisoned and then impaled for theatrics during the next Festival.

Thousands died in the first days following the massacre, with many settling grudges held at bay under Kuthuman.[5] Oor-tael's treasury was used to construct the Grand Master's palace and the four remaining houses' palaces.[1]
