The Phasing of Teferi's Isle was an event that happened on Teferi's Isle, part of Zhalfir on the continent of Jamuraa, on the plane of Dominaria.[1])
Description
The Phasing of Teferi’s Isle was an important temporal event in c. 3995 AR that removed the Chaza Isles — including their people, structures, and ecosystems — from the flow of time for two centuries. Caused by a failed magical experiment conducted by the planeswalker Teferi, the phasing would have lasting repercussions for the continent of Jamuraa and the multiverse.
Returning from years of planar wandering, Teferi found his homeland of Zhalfir fractured and volatile. Seeking to stabilize the region, he located and trained a promising royal descendant. She rose to power with his guidance as Queen Yormeba, bringing a tenuous peace to the continent. But despite her efforts, the reunification of Zhalfir, Femeref, and Suq’Ata remained elusive.
Frustrated by political infighting and disappointed by mortal short-sightedness, Teferi withdrew from Jamuraa’s affairs entirely. He gathered a circle of loyal advisors, sages, artificers, and sorcerers, and set sail for the hidden Chaza Isles, an archipelago cloaked from ordinary sight. There, he established Teferi’s Isle, a secluded enclave for magical research.
Teferi’s goal on the isle was to manipulate time itself, specifically to make the summoning of creatures more efficient by exploiting temporal distortion. Early results were erratic, and over time, it became clear that their work was destabilizing the temporal continuum. The first experiments tore small rents in time, unnoticed at first but compounding over the years.
Realizing the danger, Teferi attempted to “heal” the fabric of time by releasing a powerful blast of raw mana. His solution, however, was far worse than the problem. The explosion phased the entire island — its people, buildings, flora, and fauna, as well as the planeswalker himself — out of existence. Only the bedrock remained visible in the physical plane, the rest trapped in a separate, timeless state. To the rest of the world, the Chaza Isles simply vanished.
Two centuries later, Teferi’s Isle phased back into reality. For its inhabitants, no time had passed — they believed only hours or days had gone by. It was not until a dragon sent by Jolrael attacked the isle that they realized something was amiss; the whole subcontinent was embroiled in the bloody Mirage War - a war that had become possible due to Teferi's absence. Teferi investigated and uncovered the truth: the island had been suspended outside time for 200 years.
The Phasing of Teferi’s Isle stands as one of the most consequential magical mishaps in Jamuraan history. Though unintentional, it was a stark demonstration of the dangers posed by unchecked temporal manipulation. Teferi’s retreat from worldly affairs — and his later guilt over the consequences of that choice — would shape his future path, including his eventual role in attempting to restore Zhalfir during the Temporal crisis of Dominaria.[1]
