Eirdu is an elemental god, the living embodiment of Lorwyn and a symbol of the sun. With Isilu, it is the twin worldsoul of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor.
Description
Eirdu is the living embodiment of Lorwyn and a symbol of the sun.[1] Its presence feels like a soft breeze and the gentle warmth of spring. Being near Eirdu is rejuvenating for both the body and the spirit and produces a contentedness with life itself. When threatened, it can bring down the ruinous heat of the sun upon its enemies with blinding pillars of endless light. It avoids interactions with Lorwyn's people, though locals frequently witness Eirdu in flight, trailing the sun across the sky.[2] Eirdu and its counterpart Isilu wander Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, the land changing beneath their footfalls. While one is awake, the other is meant to sleep and await their turn at balancing the plane between light and dark. If one were to die, it would eventually regenerate and return balance to the plane.[3]
Eirdu is the elemental of day.[4] Physically, It is a massive, pegasus-like being with six legs, a beaked head, and white and crimson fur on its mane and wings.[2] It has a long tail of thorns, and a gleaming sun hovers just above its head, radiating warmth and light.[4] Its roar sounds like a dawn chorus of birds compressed into a single, echoing column of sound.[5]
Worship
Eirdu's adherents lay claim to all of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor and seek to convert the entire plane into Lorwyn.[1] They wear armor with sunburst motifs and wings, symbols they've taken from the body of Eirdu and rallied behind. They invoke its blessings with jingling bells and dancing feet, as they believe that where there is joy, there is the warmth of the sun.[2]
Worshipers of Eirdu gather on cold days, when the light of the sun gleams less warmly than before, to perform sacraments in the Festival of Idyllglare. A pyre is erected at the center of an ancient dolmen, or at the center of a settlement, should there be no standing stones around. An idolatrous costume in the shape of Eirdu itself is placed atop an elemental and paraded around the circle until the pyre gives out. As the pyre burns, adherents will feed its flames with crops and valued heirlooms, extending the ritual's time until the elemental collapses with exhaustion or no more offerings can be produced.[1]
History
As a consequence of Oona's downfall, the aspects of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor were no longer held at bay from one another. As the aspects merged, two great beings reawakened from the firmament above the plane: Eirdu, the incarnation of the sun, and Isilu, the incarnation of the moon. Their appearance initially caused chaos until it became apparent that they had no interest in the lives of the people of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, or in one another. Still, many have taken to worshiping these two beings as deities, despite their seeming indifference to the people who live on the plane.[1]
Isilu and Eirdu found a balance where the boundaries between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor would only change gradually. This balance was destabilized when a certain faerie caused Isilu's rest to be disturbed by a group of hapless visiting students from abroad.[6]
