Information
Plane Lorwyn–Shadowmoor

A crannog is a type of dwelling used by the merrow, the river-dwelling folk native to the plane of Lorwyn–Shadowmoor.[1] Crannogs serve as the primary settlements of the merrow and are designed to support both their aquatic lifestyle and interactions with creatures that live on land.

Description

A typical crannog is built to provide easy access to both the water and the riverbank of the Merrow Lanes, bridging the world above and below the surface. On first glance, a crannog may appear as a modest floating village, with huts or platforms clustered together on the river's surface. However, what is visible above the water is only a small portion of its true size. Beneath the waterline, a crannog extends deep down to the riverbed, where the main body of the merrow community resides in an intricate network of underwater chambers and passages. The submerged portion houses the majority of the merrow population, who spend much of their time swimming through the currents that flow around and through their hidden dwellings.

Crannogs allow the merrow to maintain their secretive, water-bound lives while still trading or communicating with surface dwellers when needed. Visitors from the land can walk on the floating platforms and interact with the merrow in the upper levels, while the depths remain out of reach to outsiders. This unique design reflects the merrow's nature as guardians of the rivers and keepers of secrets that run as deep as the waters they inhabit.
