The Festival of Tales was an event on the plane of Lorwyn in 4520 AR.[1]
Description
The Festival of Tales was held in Kinsbaile, and was an annual gathering intended as a story-sharing circle between the clachan's kithkin and other denizens of Lorwyn. Hundreds of faeries were known to attend, lending their ever-present hum to the bustle of activity and lighting up the skies with lights to give the town an enchanted glow. In the days leading up to the festivities, the town would be abuzz with activity and preparation. Concession stands and stalls were erected, containing a variety of games like knocking down bottles of ale with pinecones to win prizes. Finally, to coincide with the annual aurora, stories from Lorwyn's deep and distant past would be told.[1]
The festival had been held for decades without complication until 4520 AR when the last red yew, Colfenor, was honored as a guest and storyteller. As that year's festival started, the hunting packs of Nath, Taercenn of the Gilt-Leaf, converged upon the celebration. Attacking without warning, they shot Brion Stoutarm and his brother Kiel full of arrows doused with moonglove poison, knocking them out almost instantly before charging Rhys and his party. The latter were only saved by the quick actions of Sygg, who bore them all away on the Wanderwine River.
The elves invading Kinsbaile quickly subdued the clachan's Cenn, Gaddock Teeg, and forced him to do their bidding. Colfenor sent a forged message to Brigid Baeli, ordering her to abduct the flamekin Ashling and lure the outcast Rhys to the festival. After a struggle in the Murmuring Bosk, where Ashling was doused and knocked unconscious, and Brigid broke her arm badly, the kithkin told Rhys that it had been Ashling who had gone mad and attacked her.
After Rhys healed her, Brigid then swept the dying flamekin away with her winged bow. Rhys received help from Maralen and the Vendilion clique to swiftly follow, carried by young faeries. When he landed in Kinsbaile, he was challenged to a duel by Nath, who chased him into the Kinswood like a hunted deer. The two struggled, but Rhys proved the superior combatant, breaking Nath's neck. They were then both revealed as eyeblights, as their beautifying glamers faded. The stunned pack could only watch as Rhys escaped, while his former friend Gryffid swore vengeance over him.
Meanwhile, back in Kinsbaile, Ashling was approached by a greater elemental, which reignited the flamekin, saving her life. This came at the cost of both Colfenor's and Cenn Teeg's[2] lives, as they burned away in the conflagration. Having previously ordered Rhys to plant the sapling of Colfenor in the Murmuring Bosk, Colfenor's plans to transfer his wisdom to this new life form took form. Brigid and Rhys decided to join forces and rescued Ashling from the town square even as the pack started hunting them.[1]
