Description
Kiel’s height equaled his brother Brion Stoutarm’s, but his shape was entirely different. He was broad-shouldered, even more so than Brion, but his muscle-swollen upper body tapered down to a narrow waist on top of a stunted pair of legs that seemed better suited to a kithkin than a giant. Where Brion was almost proportional from head to toe, at least two-thirds of Kiel’s body length was his torso.
Kiel’s long arms hung straight to the ground, and the calluses on the backs of his knuckles had been hardened and polished smooth from years of being dragged along behind their owner. Kiel’s head was long, almost oblong, and it came to a rounded point at both crown and chin. His face was narrow, the features crowded together near its center, and his tiny, round ears stood out almost perpendicular to his skull. Kiel was bald, but he sported a set of long white chin whiskers that stretched down to the ground. The end of his beard was a tangled mass of dirt, rocks, blood, and tree limbs.
Kiel was also brother to Rosheen Meanderer. He was said to have some prophetic talents, which is not surprising given that Rosheen was the most renowned giant oracle on Lorwyn. He was quite silent and thoughtful.
History
Brion and Kiel were hired by Rhys to help eliminate a boggart raiding party. Rhys was then ordered by Nath to send the giants away, but they refused to leave until the work was done. In the end, they agreed to go if Rhys brought stories to their sister, Rosheen Meanderer. During the Festival of Tales, Rhys met the giant brothers again near Kinsbaile. However, the group was ambushed during their talk by the Gilt Leaf pursuit commando, and both were struck by moonglove-poisoned arrows and knocked unconscious.
Kiel and Brion both survived and were brought to the Gilt-Leaf Wood to be turned into vinebred servants of Gryffid. A rescue mission staged by Brigid Baeli, Rhys, Maralen, Ashling, and the Vendilion Clique roused the two giant brothers before the vines could wholly consume them, and they fled together to the Murmuring Bosk. After the party split into four, Kiel joined Brion, Maralen, Rhys, Vessa, and Illiona in traveling north to the giant country to meet with the giants' sister, Rosheen. Kiel stayed by Rosheen's side while Brion, Rhys, and Maralen traveled a bit further on, where they were ambushed by the Gilt-Leaf hunters led by Eidren. In this confrontation, Brion was killed by moonglove poison thrown into his mouth by Eidren, leaving Kiel and Rosheen to face the Great Aurora without their brother.
In Shadowmoor, Kiel was tracked down by Endry and his groundling troops, captured, and put to sleep. He was reawakened in time for the Sapling of Colfenor and Rhys to catch up and recruit him to the battle of Kinscaer, where they faced off against Ashling, the Destroyer. Kiel was injured in this battle, shot through his shoulder by a puncture blast from Ashling, but he survived and went on to enter the Wilt-Leaf Wood where he also participated in the battle against Oona. He survived this as well and was one of those who went on to experience Lorwyn-Shadowmoor with its new day and night cycle.[1]
