A clachan (pronunciation) is a small village or tight-knit town inhabited by kithkin on the plane of Lorwyn. These settlements are typically rural and pastoral, embodying the values of community, cooperation, and tradition that define kithkin society. The Shadowmoor counterpart of a clachan is called a doun.
Description
Each clachan serves as a home to kithkin families and close friends who live in harmony with the natural world surrounding them, often nestled among gentle hills, meadows, or wooded groves. The architectural style of clachans features sturdy stone cottages and timber frames, reflecting the Gaelic origin of the term itself.
Clachans on Lorwyn are not just simple habitations but centers of kithkin culture and society. Life in these villages is governed by mutual aid and shared responsibility, with festivals, communal meals, and storytelling reinforcing social bonds. The peaceful coexistence and connection to the land are paramount; many clachans engage in small-scale farming, craftwork, and foraging.
Etymology
The word "clachan" originates from Gaelic, meaning "stone," which highlights the traditional building materials frequently used in these villages. Stone walls, cobblestone paths, and hearth-centered homes give these settlements a sense of permanence and warmth despite their humble size.
Known clachans
Each clachan has its unique flavor and history, often reflected in the cards and lore associated with it:
- Ballyrush — Known for its large herd of springjacks and proud use of banners, Ballyrush thrives on cooperation and the smithing traditions that supply weapons and tools for neighboring clachans.[citation needed] Its doun equivalent is Ballynock, which is known for its hunters and trappers.[1]
- Burrenton — A large clachan near Spinerock Knoll.[1][2] Known for smiths and bottled fires, and engages in trade with neighboring flamekin.[1] Its doun equivalent is Barrenton.[1]
- Cloverdell — A large clachan.[2] Famous for its lush, green meadows and connection to nature magic, Cloverdell is a place of growth and nurturing protected by treefolk. Its doun equivalent is Thistledown.[citation needed]
- Duinshyle — A smaller, more remote clachan which is reachable by air transport.[citation needed]
- Dundoolin — Site of a belltower rebuilt by cenn Hyal Lwellen. Lwellen established trade with the Paperfin merrows, and a school devoted to elemental study.[3] The clachan is now known for its scholars and sages.[1] Its doun equivalent is Dundaeron.[4]
- Fen Grieve — This clachan lies near wetlands and marshes.[citation needed]
- Goldmeadow — A small farming clachan.[1][2] Famous for raising springjacks which are appreciated by knights from Kinsbaile and Cloverdell.[5] Its doun equivalent is Mistmeadow.
- Kinsbaile — The largest clachan, and host to the Festival of Tales.[1][2] The entire population of its doun equivalent, Kinscaer, was killed by Oona. It has since been repopulated.[1]
- Longlake — Located along a small brackish lake, known for its shipbuilding and for producing the best swimmers among all kithkin.[1]
