The "Sapling of Colfenor", was a young "female" treefolk (though treefolk do not truly have genders) born from the seed cone of Colfenor, the Red Yew, the last yew treefolk sage on Lorwyn. It was a part of Colfenor's master plan focused on freeing Lorwyn from Oona's control.[1][2]
Description
The sapling did not so much resemble Colfenor as evoke what the old log might have been as a newborn female. The resemblance was only slight, but it was enough to unsettle Ashling and unnerve Rhys. The nameless treefolk was well over nine feet tall, her bark ruddy and fresh. Her trunk was lean, no wider than an elf, and crowned by a simple array of four main boughs. Two long, branchlike arms hung from halfway up her trunk. Her wide facial features stretched between her arms, sharp ridges of bark carving out brows and cheeks around a bent, protruding nose. Her huge, asymmetrical eyes were a rich, reddish gold that filled each socket to the brim, her irises ragged circles of green and black.[3]
More than one year after the Great Aurora, she stood some twelve to fifteen feet tall. She was yet a young tree, but certainly her name was not quite accurate anymore — this tree had not been a sapling for some time. Her boughs were lush green and glittering red, the bark covering her strong limbs a rich, healthy ochre untouched by canker or disease. Her face was almost like the face of an elf carved into the bark, long and narrow beneath a crown of reddish needles and a wooden mouth cut in an almost permanent half-smile. The sapling was more vibrant than any tree in the Wilt-Leaf Wood, even those lining the moonlit paths of Cayr Ulios.[4]
History
The Sapling was one of the beings that survived the Great Aurora with its memories intact, and along with Maralen, Brigid, and Ashling, played an important role in Oona's fall.
After guiding the characters according to Colfernor's plans, it is ultimately destroyed by Oona, presumably making the yew treefolk extinct.
