The Mox Opal is a legendary artifact and mox jewel seen on the planes of Mirrodin / New Phyrexia and Kaladesh.

Description

The Mox Opal was originally seen on Mirrodin / New Phyrexia in the possession of the Mirran Resistance (due to its use of Metalcraft) where it is said the suns of Mirrodin shone upon perfection only once. Though it eventually fell into the hand of a Phyrexian who admired its perfection to such a degree that defied the Phyrexian Orthodoxy as it caused her to question if perfection existed beyond compleation. It appeared as a colorful opal encased in a metallic medallion. It was also one of the inventions seen at the Inventors' Fair on Kaladesh where it was said to be on loan from a private collection and had a unique mechanism that extracts power from the carefully prepared gemstone.

Trivia

  • The Mox Opal was an attempt by the game designers to create a more balanced version of the original Moxes by way of adding additional cost beyond the zero mana casting cost. Despite this additional cost, it was still considered to be quite powerful and was banned in Modern in January 2020.[1]
