Vahd is a fertile and expansive plain in northern Avishkar, long known for its golden, terraced wheat fields that earned it the nickname the Golden Steps. Generations of dwarven farmers cultivated these fields, forming tight-knit villages linked by old forts and traditions that once sent young dwarves south toward the bright promise of Ghirapur. With the arrival of the Great Aether Boom, however, Vahd reinvented itself as Kaladesh’s heart of the aerowright industry, trading wheat for runways, hangars, and the endless skies above.
Description
Vahd is an expansive region on the plane of Avishkar that was once known primarily for its vast wheat farms and generations of hardworking farmers.[1]
North of Ghirapur, Vahd stretches across a wide expanse of rolling plains between the Vinday River and its largest tributary, the Mapani, reaching all the way north to the Devra Cliffs. The region is famed for its rich soil and ideal climate for wheat, earning it the nickname The Golden Steps for its miles of terraced, golden farmland. Most of the farmers who first settled these fertile plains were dwarves, and they remain the majority population today, with humans forming a small minority. In ancient times, Vahd’s valuable fields were the cause of bloody conflicts, leaving behind a network of forts scattered across the plains. These old forts have since become the nuclei for dozens of villages and towns that dot the landscape.[2]
Despite its distance from the heart of Avishkar’s invention, Vahd has long been drawn to the energy of Ghirapur. For generations, young dwarves would leave the Golden Steps in search of adventure and opportunity in the city. Their journey south evolved into a rite of passage, mirroring the dwarven Path of Proficiency. This traditional path began in the northern village of Chunma beneath the Devra Cliffs, with travelers working their way southward, stopping in each village to apprentice under local artisans and inventors. Along the way, they collected letters of introduction to smooth their integration into Ghirapur’s tight-knit dwarven communities.[2]
The Great Aether Boom transformed Vahd’s quiet farmlands almost overnight. The once-endless wheat fields surrounding the clustered villages of Panka, Cambi, and Maranjapur were cleared to make way for runways, hangars, and massive workshops. Vahd quickly grew into a major hub for the aerowright industry, producing and testing new airship designs that rival those of Ghirapur itself. Farmers trained as aerowrights and test pilots, and the region’s reputation for airship innovation began to draw aeronauts, engineers, and curious inventors from all across Kaladesh.[2]
Today, Vahd’s fields hum with the sound of engines rather than the rustle of wheat, and its clustered villages boast more airships than even Ghirapur. The booming industry has also attracted new waves of humans and aetherborn eager to learn, build, and test the next generation of Kaladesh’s airborne marvels.[2]
