Lathnu is known as the City at the Top of the World, a rugged northern settlement perched high on the Devra Cliffs where fierce winds, rich metal mines, and aether collectors sustain a community of hardy miners, engineers, and traders who help fuel Avishkar’s endless innovation.
Description
Lathnu is a remote settlement perched high atop the Devra Cliffs in the far north of Avishkar.[1]
Perched high above sheer cliffs that seem to touch the sky, Lathnu stands as one of Avishkar's most isolated yet vital settlements. The constant winds that whip around the Devra Cliffs are thin, biting cold, and relentless, shaping the hardy spirit of the people who call Lathnu home. Local legend claims that beyond the city rises the Great Climb, a final wall of mountains that reaches to the heavens themselves. Despite such stories, most seasoned guides will warn any who ask that venturing north of Lathnu only leads to an icy grave among treacherous peaks. The settlement is made up mostly of resilient humans and dwarves who thrive in the frigid heights. Aether refinement in the area also gives rise to aetherborn, many of whom remain in Lathnu to work in the same factories that brought them into being. The frigid climate discourages vedalken and elves from settling here, leaving Lathnu largely to those able to endure the cold.[2]
A vertical rail line links Lathnu to the world below, connecting the city to caravans that slowly wind their way down the sparse trails through the mountains toward Ghirapur. However, the primary lifeline of Lathnu is its bustling airdock, which clings dramatically to the edge of the cliffs and sees a steady flow of airships coming and going. The economy of Lathnu depends heavily on the rich metal ores mined from the surrounding mountains. This constant supply of raw metal feeds Ghirapur's endless demand for material used in its countless devices and inventions. Additionally, Lathnu’s altitude allows its residents to harvest aether directly from the sky using rooftop collectors. Unlike the large central refineries common in the capital, Lathnu's aether refinement is handled by numerous small facilities scattered throughout the settlement, giving individual miners and engineers a measure of independence and profit.[2]
This decentralized industry not only supports Lathnu’s tight-knit community of miners and inventors but also provides a crucial surplus to Ghirapur’s growing needs. A portion of refined aether is transported away by airship, but much of it now flows through a massive pipeline connecting the city at the top of the world to the beating heart of Kaladesh far below. Despite its remoteness, Lathnu remains deeply connected to the greater network of Avishkar's inventors and dreamers, supplying both metal and aether to fuel wonders yet to be imagined.[2]
