A safehold is an elven refuge and stronghold found in Shadowmoor.
Description
Unlike in Lorwyn, where the elves are free-roaming throughout the whole of the Gilt-Leaf Wood, the elves of Shadowmoor huddle behind fortified walls, much like the kithkin do in their douns. The safeholds are spread throughout Shadowmoor, both inside and outside the Wilt-Leaf Wood. The safeholds are often beset by dangers, and at least three occasions of safeholds being destroyed are known.[1]
Known safeholds
- Cayr Ulios - the capital and and largest and most centrally located safehold of the Wilt-Leaf Wood.[2]
- Dusklight Safehold - after a long period of suffering attacks from nearby merrow, the elves of Dusklight found the Cloudbreaker, a magical stone that, according to myth, could summon a powerful creature to act as a defender. After the elves killed off the merrow with a strong poison, an army of creatures from the Wilt-Leaf Wood, including treefolk, Spriggans and scatchs, attacked the safehold. The elves did not use the Cloudbreaker, feeling they were unworthy of it, and the safehold was destroyed. After killing two of his fellow elves, Cavan was the only survivor.[1]
- Lochran Safehold - the safehold where Valya and her family lived. After her parents left to defend Trendan's Safehold, where they were killed, Valya was left with only her grandmother as family.[1]
- Safehold Taldwen - the safehold of the legendary hero Gond.
- Strongroot Safehold - the only safehold in Raven's Run was destroyed by treefolk led by the Canker witch Amur Brokenlimb. Joram Twohorns was the only survivor and unwitting pawn of Amur's schemes.[1]
- Trendan's Safehold - after a banshee riled up a pack of boggarts, Trendan sent out a call for aid from elves from other safeholds. Despite being reinforced by additional defenders, the safehold fell to the boggart horde, with Valya's parents among the slain.[1]
