Conqueror's Foothold is a notorious fortification of the Legion of Dusk on Ixalan. Overseen by the infamous Vona, the Butcher of Magan, the fortress serves as both a military stronghold and a grim prison where captives are executed to sustain the Legion's vampiric rituals.
Description
Conqueror's Foothold is part of the Queen's Bay area, on mainland Ixalan just north of the island featuring Fort Adanto. To the north of the foothold lies a Field of Ruin, which can be reached in 4 hours of walking.[1]
Conqueror's Foothold is a fortified outpost established by Adrian Adanto and the Legion of Dusk during their colonial campaigns on Ixalan. Built from dark stone and iron, the fortress is designed to be impenetrable, with high walls, watchtowers, and a central keep that houses its commanding officers. Its interior includes prison cells, ritual chambers, and execution grounds.[1]
The Foothold exists primarily to provide the Legion's conquistadors with a steady supply of blood. According to strict rites, members of the Legion may only feed on the blood of their foes. Thus, the prison holds captured enemies of the state and others deemed undesirable by the Legion's authorities. Once every full moon, these prisoners are ritually slaughtered to sustain the vampires' unholy hunger.[1]
History
Until she left for Orazca, Conqueror's Foothold was commanded by Vona de Iedo, the Butcher of Magan. After forging her brutal reputation in the Apostasine Wars and the conquest of Torrezon, Vona joined the first fleet to cross the sea to Ixalan. As a conquistador, she established the Foothold as a stronghold to expand her influence and pursue ambitions that exceeded the Legion's official orders.
Vona discovered a map leading to the Hierophant's Chalice, an artifact said to create an endless supply of blood. Believing the Chalice could offer the Legion of Dusk far more power than it already had, she used Conqueror's Foothold as a base of operations to find the relic. The prisoners held within served not only as sustenance for the Legion's rituals but also as leverage and forced labor for her expeditions into Ixalan's wild interior.[1]
Among the garrison was Alante, a vampire cleric of the Order of the Five Sacraments, a sect that favors trade with the Sun Empire over subjugation. Posted at the Foothold to administer last rites, Alante secretly turned against Vona after learning of her plot. Stealing the map, she freed the doomed prisoners and led them to the Temple of Aclazotz ahead of Vona’s forces, ultimately securing the Chalice for her order and thwarting Vona’s plan.[1]
