Ashtok is the name of an unknown Phyrexian demon mentioned in the Shattered Chains novel.

Trivia

Ashtok's main claim to fame is that his name keeps appearing on lists of planes across the Internet. This came from people's interpretation of the following passage:

  • "Phyrexia is a plane so distant most wizards don't know it exists, let alone visit there. Many thought it destroyed in the Brother's War. A plane of demons, like Ashtok and others. Yet Phyrexia's demons serve a purpose, a geas leftover from the war."

This could be interpreted as:

  • "Phyrexia is A plane of demons, like [the plane] Ashtok and the others. Yet Phyrexia's demons [unlike Ashtokian ones] serve a purpose, a geas leftover from the war."

as:

  • "Phyrexia is A plane of demons, like [the Phyrexian demon] Ashtok and the others. Yet Phyrexia's demons [unlike non-Phyrexian ones] serve a purpose, a geas leftover from the war."

or as:

  • "Phyrexia is A plane of demons, like [the non-Phyrexian demon] Ashtok and the others. Yet Phyrexia's demons [unlike Ashtok] serve a purpose, a geas leftover from the war."

Following the first interpretation, it was put on various people's lists of planes. However, the author of Shattered Chains, Clayton Emery, revealed in an e-mail (from May 25, 2006) that the second interpretation is true and that Ashtok is the name of a further unmentioned demon.
