Palmyra is a city in Jamuraa on Dominaria. It is located along the River Toloron halfway between Tirras and Bryce.
Description
The River Toloron flows from far-northern Tirras some two hundred leagues, or six hundred miles, across the desert of Sukurvia, to end at Bryce and the Sea of Serenity. Parlmyra is the only town which thrives along the river's length, seventy leagues above Bryce, for the forbidding desert barely supports nomads and goats. The River Toloron bends around the town, forming a tight oxbow barely a bowshot wide. The town is nearly as inhospitable as the sands, a refuge for misfits, wayfarers, mercenaries, and criminals who only agree never to meddle in neighbors' affairs.[1]
Locations in Palmyra
- The Docks - moved to an upper area after the damming of the river. After the dam broke, the lower docks were rebuilt.[1]
- The North Seawall - a girded stone wall fortification facing north, formerly overlooking the Johan's Joy lake and two of the city's stone jetties, now overlooking the river instead.[1]
- Smiths' Lane - where Hazezon Tamar collected forged copper headbands for spelunking.[1]
History
Palmyra used to be a sleepy town consisting of some fifty tiny dwellings atop a bedrock knoll, as permanent a place as one could find in the ever-shifting desert. Palmyra stayed strictly neutral, hung between Tirras and Bryce, and levied a tax against anyone passing by on the river or dunes. Palmyra also served as a safety valve for both cities. Troublemakers turned out of the gates of Bryce usually gravitated to Palmyra, where no one pried into secrets.
Palmyra became embroiled in Johan's War after the Battle of Bryce, when the city's governor, Hazezon Tamar traveled upriver to Palmyra to negotiate with his ex-wife Adira Strongheart. Although initially dismissive of Hazezon's pleas, Adira joined her pirates with Hazezon's warriors after a botched assassination attempt by Johan. While Adira obtained riches in Unawanna, Hazezon dammed the Toloron, creating an artificial lake above the dam. The lake, nicknamed "Johan's Joy", drowned the river's hairpin completely, while Palmyra lay perched on a stone slab above, now with great views of the new lake. After the damming of the river, the town grew from a sleepy hamlet to a bustling township, with hawkers and adventurers and rogues and explorers of all kinds and races swarming the streets. When Adira returned from a raid, she hardly recognized her own home. During the Battle of Palmyra, the dam was destroyed, and the lake drained away.[1] Although Palmyra was partially buried by a conjured sandstorm, the city was dug out and continued to thrive.[2]
