Ghirapur, also called Indigo City[1], is the capital and beating heart of innovation on Avishkar (formerly Kaladesh), renowned for its mastery of aether and its thriving culture of invention. Built as a neutral meeting ground after the War of Eleven, the city has grown into a vast, living machine powered by ingenious design and limitless creativity. Today, its towers, canals, and marketplaces bustle with inventors, pilots, and artisans whose work fuels Ghirapur’s status as the plane’s foremost center of technological progress and hope.[2]
Description
Ghirapur is the largest city on Avishkar and a center of innovation, industry, and aether technology. Its streets and canals are filled with a wide variety of vehicles and machinery, including thopters, automatons, and other aether-powered devices. The city is home to a diverse population of inventors, engineers, pilots, investors, and artisans of many races, all contributing to its constant activity and growth. Ghirapur's infrastructure is built around the collection and distribution of aether, which powers everything from transportation to manufacturing. The city's skyline is dominated by the Aether Spire, a massive tower visible from nearly anywhere in Ghirapur. The spire gathers raw aether and distributes it through refineries and distribution centers arranged according to the Consulate's original grid system. The city is divided into numerous neighborhoods, each with its unique character and purpose. As the seat of the Consulate government, Ghirapur continues to promote the founding ideals of invention, creative freedom, and progress.[3]
Locations
- The Aetherflux Reservoir
- the largest aether storage facility in Ghirapur, acting as a massive holding chamber that powers the city's countless inventions and industries. Suspended high above the skyline, it stands as both a symbol of innovation and a source of conflict over the city's control of aether..[4]
- Akhara - a huge, round plaza ringed with tiered seats. The arena is used for public executions and was the site for Chandra's ignition and the grand finale of the Inventors' Fair.
- Bomat
- the restless heart of Ghirapur's trade, a maze of piers, canals, warehouses, and secret docks where the city's lawful commerce and its shadowy dealings collide.[3]
- The Dhund - a hidden warren of tunnels beneath Gonti's Night Market where the Consulate's secret agents observe, record, and manipulate the city's illicit dealings. Patient and methodical, the Dhund's operatives prefer shadowy surveillance to open confrontation, striking only when they can dismantle an entire criminal network at once.[3]
- The Night Markets
- Ghirapur's night markets spring up in hidden corners and abandoned spaces, offering goods and services too rare, risky, or illicit for daylight trade. They draw tinkers, smugglers, and buyers alike, thriving on the city’s hunger for aether and invention beyond Consulate control.[3]
- Gonti's Night Market
- Ghirapur's only permanent night market, hidden in the abandoned energy plants of Bomat where aetherborn crime lords control the trade of contraband aether and renegade inventions. History
Ghirapur was founded in the aftermath of the War of Eleven as a neutral ground between eleven feuding principalities. While originally only the capital of a small stretch of coastland, its influence soon eclipsed its surrounding nations, and it became the dominant power. From the founding of Ghirapur, its zones grew from a practical division based on the necessity of aether distribution into municipal boundaries, and eventually into a more nebulous set of neighborhoods, each with its distinct character. Ghirapur became a massive cogwork machine that came alive with the power of aether. Enormous pipelines carried aether to the whole city, and officially, every citizen of Ghirapur was said to have access to that substance.[3]
Ghirapur was host to both the Inventors' Fair and the Aether Revolt in 4560 AR, causing a change in leadership for the city, with Pia Nalaar becoming part of the Consulate, while Kambal and Dovin Baan both lost their respective positions.
Ghirapur was a major target of the New Phyrexian Invasion, as the Phyrexians sought to strike the Aetherflux Reservoir directly.[8] Most of the city's citizens were evacuated days before the invasion. Saheeli developed 'Operation Golden Scales,' a collection of bronze Dinosaurs, to aid in the city's defense.
After the Invasion, a wealth of stable Omenpaths appeared in and around Ghirapur.[10] The city was poised to become a center of Multiversal trade, travel, and industry. To further this objective, the interplanar Ghirapur Grand Prix was organized.[11]
