The Aetherflux Reservoir is one of the most iconic structures in Ghirapur, an immense chamber that stores vast quantities of refined aether for the city's inventors and factories. Designed by the eccentric inventor Satya during the early days of the Great Aether Boom, it revolutionized how aether was distributed and regulated. While its elegant design and shimmering glow are a testament to Kaladesh's ingenuity, the Reservoir has also become a point of tension between the Consulate and renegade inventors. To this day, it remains at the heart of Ghirapur's thriving, contested relationship with aether.
Description
The Aetherflux Reservoir is the largest of Avishkar's many aether storage facilities, located in the bustling city of Ghirapur. While the city depends on a complex network of smaller reservoirs and distribution hubs, the Aetherflux Reservoir is by far the grandest and most important, acting as a central holding chamber for refined aether before it is routed through the city's vast network of pipes, conduits, and towers. Suspended high above the city and supported by ornate pillars, the reservoir gleams with a swirling blue energy, visible for miles and serving as both a symbol of progress and a reminder of Ghirapur's reliance on this vital resource.[1]
The reservoir's main purpose is to stabilize the city's aether supply, ensuring that inventors, artisans, and factories have uninterrupted access to power their intricate machines, thopters, and constructs. Its immense storage capacity allows the Consulate to regulate aether flow during times of high demand or political unrest. During the Inventors' Fair, the Aetherflux Reservoir became a centerpiece of awe and contention alike, drawing the attention of renegade inventors who viewed the Consulate's tight control over aether as stifling and unjust.[1]
History
As the inventor of aetherflux reservoirs, the eccentric Satya is one of the two figures primarily responsible for ushering in the era of the Great Aether Boom, when aether was refined and made accessible to all. Though historians tend to overemphasize the role of Avaati Vya, who discovered how to harness aether in the first place, in reality, theirs was an equal collaboration in which both partners encouraged and inspired each other. Even during his own time, Satya was indifferent toward fame or recognition, happy to let Avaati step into the limelight so he could focus on what he truly cared about - new creations.[2]
As an architect and inventor, Satya was known for his frequent wild tangents and half-finished works-in-progress whenever a new idea caught his fancy.[2] Although he's best known for designing the Aetherflux Reservoir, he's also credited with countless other inventions, including highly efficient aethership engine designs as well as a variety of unsolvable puzzleknots. He devoted much of his time trying to perfect a foolproof gremlin-repelling device, and it remained one of his biggest frustrations that he was never able to find a permanent solution for those pests.
Today, the Aetherflux Reservoir remains a symbol of Ghirapur's ingenuity and its complex relationship with progress and control. It embodies the ideals of the Consulate's vision for a regulated society powered by clean aether, but it also serves as a rallying point for dissenters who believe that the flow of innovation should never be monopolized. Many legendary inventors have worked in the shadow of the Reservoir's gleaming spires, dreaming up devices that might one day reshape the future of Avishkar itself.[1]
